Abstract
Diabetes melitus (DM) adalah gangguan metabolisme kronis akibat insufisiensi fungsi insulin dan mengembangkan komplikasi vaskuler. Lesi pada rongga mulut yang umum terjadi adalah ulser yaitu keadaan hilangnya lapisan epitelium mukosa mulut hingga melebihi membran basalis sampai mengenai lamina propria. Propolis adalah bahan alami dengan sifat antimikroba, antikanker, antijamur, antivirus dan anti-inflamasi. Selain itu royal jelly memiliki aktivitas biologis seperti fungsi insulin-like dan antioksidan yang dapat mengurangi komplikasi mikrovaskuler (retinopati, neuropati, dan nefropati) yang disebabkan oleh diabetes melitus. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui efek propolis dan royal jelly peroral terhadap ekspresi VEGF pada penyembuhan ulkus traumatikus mukosa rongga mulut tikus putih strain wistar diabetes melitus. Metode: Sebanyak 6 tikus putih (Rattus norvegicus) strain wistar pada masing-masing kelompok, yaitu kelompok kontrol, kelompok propolis, kelompok royal jelly, dan kelompok campuran diberikan streptozotocin kemudian dilakukan induksi ulser, dan diberi perlakuan sesuai kelompok. Tikus kemudian didekaputasi pada hari 3, 5 dan 7. Hasil dan Pembahasan: Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan jumlah ekspresi VEGF pada kelompok perlakuan meskipun secara statistik tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan. Hal ini mungkin disebabkan oleh konsentrasi atau dosis dari zat aktif yang terdapat pada propolis dan royal jelly, induksi ulser, dan metode pemberian obat. Kesimpulan: tidak terdapat perbedaan bermakna dari pemberian propolis dan royal jelly terhadap penyembuhan luka mukosa oral model hewan coba tikus diabetes melitus.
English Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) can be defined as a chronic metabolic disorder due to insufficiency of insulin function and developing vascular complications. The most common lesion in the oral cavity is ulcer, which is a loss of the epithelial lining of the oral mucosa so that it exceeds the bassal membrane and reaches the lamina propria. Propolis is a natural substance that exhibits antimicrobial, anticancer, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, royal jelly has various biological activities such as insulinlike and antioxidant functions that can reduce microvascular complications (retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy) caused by diabetes mellitus. Objective To determine the effect of oral propolis and royal jelly on VEGF expression in the healing of traumatic ulcers of the oral mucosa of Wistar strain white rats with diabetes mellitus.. Methods: A total of 6 white Wistar rats in each group, namely the control group, propolis group, royal jelly group, and mixed group were given streptozotocin then performed ulcer induction, and given treatment according to the group by intragastric sondation. The rats were then decapitated using cervical dislocation technique on their necks on day 3, 5 and 7. Results and Discussion: The results of this study showed an increase in the amount of VEGF expression in the treatment group although there was no statistically significant difference. This may be caused by the concentration or dosage of the active substances contained in propolis and royal jelly, ulcer induction, and the method of drug administration. Conclusion: there is no significant difference between the administration of propolis and royal jelly on the healing of oral mucosal wounds in experimental animal models of diabetes mellitus rats.
