Abstract
Representasi menjadi istilah yang penting karena wacana sebagai rekontekstualisasi praktik sosial mengungkapkan perbedaan sosial melalui cara orang atau benda direpresentasikan dalam wacana tersebut. Van Leeuwen (2008) mengusulkan alat analisis aktor sosial untuk menganalisis bagaimana aktor sosial yang terlibat dalam wacana direpresentasikan. Dalam penelitian ini, kerangka Representasi Aktor Sosial van Leeuwen digunakan untuk menganalisis bagaimana pelaku dan korban kekerasan seksual direpresentasikan dalam dua media berita online, yaitu The Jakarta Post dan The Washington Post. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dan Analisis Wacana Kritis sebagai desain penelitian. 12 artikel yang diambil sebagai sumber data dari kedua surat kabar versi online yang diterbitkan pada Maret 2019 hingga Februari 2020. Kata, frasa, dan klausa yang mengadopsi Representasi Aktor Sosial van Leeuwen (2008): strategi inklusi dan eksklusi dianalisis untuk mengetahui representasi pelaku dan korban dalam kedua media tersebut. Berdasarkan analisis data, hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa The Jakarta Post cenderung menggunakan strategi Inklusi yang sebagian besar meliputi Aktivasi untuk pelaku, Passivasi untuk korban, Appraisement, Fungsionalisasi, dan Nominasi. Sedangkan The Washington Post sebagian besar mengadopsi strategi Inklusi yang mencakup Aktivasi, Fungsionalisasi, Individualisasi, Objektivasi, Nominasi, Penilaian. Selain itu, studi ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua media memandang pelaku sebagai pelaku dalam wacana melalui aktivasi. Kedua media cenderung menggunakan appraisement negatif untuk mewakili pelaku dan appraisement positif untuk mewakili korban. Selain itu, kedua media menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada yang secara umum dapat diidentifikasi tentang individu yang melakukan kejahatan seks yang membedakan mereka dari individu lain terlepas dari latar belakang sosial ekonomi pelakunya.
English Abstract
Representation becomes an important term because discourse as recontextualization of social practices reveals the social difference through the way in which people or things are represented in the discourse. Van Leeuwen (2008) proposed a social actors analytical tool to analyze how the social actors involved in the discourse are represented. In this research, van Leeuwen’s Social Actor Representation framework is applied in order to analyze how perpetrator and victim of sexual violence are represented in two online news media, namely The Jakarta Post and The Washington Post. This research applied descriptive qualitative and Critical Discourse Analysis approach as the research design. 12 articles taken as the data source from both newspaper online version published on March 2019 until February 2020. Words, phrases, and clauses which adopted van Leeuwen (2008)’s Social Actor Representation: inclusion and exclusion strategies were analyzed in order to find out the representation of perpetrator and victim in both media. Based on the data analysis, the result revealed that The Jakarta Post tend to use Inclusion strategy which mostly includes Activation for the perpetrators, Passivation for the victims, Appraisement, Functionalization, and Nomination. While The Washington Post mostly adopts Inclusion strategies which includes Activation, Functionalization, Individualization, Objectivation, Nomination, Appraisement. Moreover, the findings shows that both media viewed the perpetrator as the exact doer in the discourse through activation. Both media tend to use negative appraisement to represent the perpetrators and positive appraisement to represent the victims. In addition, both media shows that there is nothing generally identifiable about individuals who commit sex crime that distinguish them from other individuals despite the perpetrators’ socio-economic background. As this study only discussed about the representation of perpetrators and victims, the researcher suggest to the next researcher who are interested in Critical Discourse Analysis to apply Van Leeuwen’s social actor representation viewed from dfferent perspective. Within the same scope, the next researcher can consider to discuss the representation of another social actors involved in sex crimes, such as police or victim’s relatives.
