Abstract

English Abstract

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of the “light the pupil” method for cataract screening in the community based on Sensitivity, Specificity, Positive Predictive Value, and Negative Predictive Value. Method: This is a population-based cross-sectional study involving 26 cadres who were given training on cataract detection with the “light the pupil” method. The trained cadres then conducted the cataract examination method to assess 909 participants. All participants were the residents of Mendalanwangi, Sidorahayu, and Cepokomulyo villages, aged 40 years or older. The results of the cadre examination were compared with the results of the LOCS III examination conducted by ophthalmologists. Results: Cataract examination with the “light the pupil” method has a sensitivity, specificity, Positive Predictive Value, and Negative Predictive Value score of 80.44%, 88,64%, 78.94%, and 89.54% respectively. Age, education level, and duration of being a cadre didn’t significantly affect the ability of cadres to detect cataract using “light the pupil” method in community. Conclusion: “Light the pupil” examination by cadres was effective to detect cataracts with medium to severe lens opacity cases in the community.
