Abstract

English Abstract

Objective: To analyze the association between dry eye disease (DED) clinical examination and DED severity grade, as well as analyze the risk factors associated with the incidence of DED. Method: This is a population-based cross-sectional study. The age of respondents ranged between 40 to 84 years old. Basic demographic data were recorded parallel with the risk factors identified. All participants underwent clinical examination of DED which included an OSDI questionnaire, tear breakup time (TBUT), degree of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and Schirmer I test. Data were analyzed using correlation and ordinal regression tests. Results: The prevalence of DED in the study population was 42.5%. Pterygium consistently has a strong relationship with the incidence of DED both in multivariate (OR:1.44) and bivariate analysis (OR:1.53), while aging is only significant in bivariate analysis (OR:1.01). In multivariate analysis, no significant effect was observed between all components of DED clinical examination to the severity of DED, the opposite result was found in bivariate analysis. Conclusion: The risk factors of DED that are closely related in statistical analysis were pterygium and aging. There is no difference between the degree of severity of DED clinical examination to the severity of DED when analyzed simultaneously, except in the analysis of each examination separately
