Abstract
English Abstract
Acrylic removable denture is one of the treatment indicated for patients with partial and total tooth loss. Using denture cleanser for maintains denture hygiene is highly important because it affects the strength, stability, retention of the denture and the health of the patient's oral cavity. In addition to chemical-based denture cleansers, the use of herbal ingredients from betel, basil, and rosella plants as denture cleansers has begun to be developed and the use of phenolic compounds can be an alternative to minimize the increase in resistance to antifungal drugs. Aim: To determine the effectiveness of herbal and non-herbal ingredients as denture cleansers against the growth of Candida albicans. Methods: This research conducted by Literature Review Study (SLR). The SLR method is used to identify, review, evaluate, and systematically interpret all literature findings. Results: Based on the results of the literature review study that has been carried out, 14 articles were found, three of which discussed non-herbal denture cleansers, five discussed rosella, two discussed betel, and three discussed basil. These three herbal (basil, rosella, and betel leaf) contains flavonoids, tannins, phenols, saponins that act as an inhibitor of Candida albicans growth and adhesion. While Chlorhexidine works against fungi and bacteria, by disrupting cellmembranes and inducing cytoplasmic precipitation. Conclusion: These herbal ingredients (basil, rosella, and betel) used as denture cleansers have apotential and effect for inhibit Candida albicans growth with their phenolic compounds and can be used as alternative herbal ingredients in addition to non-herbal ingredients such as chlorhexidine.
