Abstract

English Abstract

Seagrass and Echinoderms associate with each other and form an ecological system. Seagrass beds provide habitat for echinoderms while echinoderms which are detritus feeders play a role in decomposing organic matter in seagrass beds. Baluran National Park is a nature conservation area that has native ecosystems, one of which is the seagrass ecosystem and there are various plants and animals. This study was conducted to determine the diversity and community structure of echinoderms and the correlation between seagrass cover and echinoderms at Bama Beach and Kajang Beach, Baluran National Park. The research was conducted in May 2022 in Baluran National Park, Situbondo, East Java. The data taken include the physical and chemical parameters of the waters, namely temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen, data on seagrass cover, and data on echinoderms. Water physics and chemistry data were collected in situ, that is, directly in the field. Data collection for seagrass cover and Echinoderms was carried out using a quadrant transect method measuring 50 x 50 cm2. Analysis of the Echinoderm community structure includes species richness, density, diversity index, uniformity, and dominance. Pearson correlation method was used to determine the relationship between seagrass cover and Echinoderms. The results showed that the physical and chemical conditions of the waters were within safe and good limits for the life of echinoderms. Seagrass cover in Bama Beach was 74.34% and Kajang Beach was 67.61% and both were included in the dense category. A total of 6 species of Echinoderms were found on Bama Beach and 5 species of species were found on Kajang Beach. The species density of Echinoderms on Bama Beach is 11 ind/m2, higher than the species density on Kajang Beach of 9 ind/m2, while the percentage of relative density on the two beaches is the highest, namely Holothuria atra, 58.1% on Bama Beach and in Kajang Beach by 59.2%. Diversity, uniformity, and dominance in Bama and Kajang Beaches have the same value, namely moderate diversity, high uniformity, and low dominance. From the results of the Echinoderm community structure, it can be interpreted that the ecosystem conditions in Bama and Kajang Beaches are quite balanced, productivity is sufficient and there is not too much ecological pressure. The relationship between seagrass cover and Echinoderms shows a relationship with a very strong correlation level and a positive type of relationship, meaning that the higher the seagrass cover, the more Echinoderms in the ecosystem.
