Abstract
Sebuah film dapat dikategorikan sebagai karya sastra karena film merupakan hasil kegiatan kreatif dari sebuah karya seni. Selain itu, sebuah film dapat menggambarkan banyak aspek kehidupan manusia. Salah satu contoh film bertema religi adalah The Devil All the Time. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis berfokus pada beberapa karakter penting dalam The Devil All the Time. Karena dalam film ini, beberapa karakter melakukan hal yang bertentangan dengan identitasnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan analisis deskriptif dengan mengaplikasikan studi film dan teori kemunafikan moral. Data tersaji dalam gambar dan dialog. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan studi film yang mencakup mise en scene dan dialog. Temuan tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori kemunafikan moral. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kekuasaan memicu seseorang untuk menjadi munafik, dibantu oleh faktor pendorong hawa nafsu, yang terjadi pada Teagardin dan Bodecker, yang memiliki posisi sosial yang kritis. Teagardin menyimpang dari aturan moral atau agama saat dia menjadi pemimpin agama. Bodecker adalah penegak hukum tetapi melakukan hal-hal yang bertentangan dengan hukum. Mereka berdua menyalahgunakan kekuasaan mereka tetapi tidak menginginkan reputasi masyarakat yang buruk.
English Abstract
A movie can be categorized as a literary work because the movie is the result of the creative activity of a work of art. In addition, a movie can portray many aspects of human life. One example of a movie with religion as the theme is The Devil All the Time. In this research, the writer focuses on some significant characters in The Devil All the Time. Because in this movie, some characters do things contrary to their identity. This study applied the qualitative method with the descriptive analysis using movie studies and moral hypocrisy theory. The data were presented in pictures and dialogues. To analyze the data, the researcher uses movie studies which includes mise en scene and dialog. The findings are then analyzed by using moral hypocrisy theory. Result of this study shows that power triggers someone to be a hypocrite, assisted by the driving factor of carnal desires, which happened to Teagardin and Bodecker, who have critical societal positions. Teagardin deviated from moral or religious rules while he was a religious leader. Bodecker is a law enforcer but does things against the law. They both abuse their power but do not want a bad societal reputation.
