Rastika Damayanti Putri, Dyah (2022) Social Criticism Through Humor: A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Bo Burnham’s Inside. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
After the release of Bo Burnham: Inside, it has been widely considered that the comedy special contains semiotic resources that criticize global social issues. To delve deeper into this argument, the researcher analyzes the illustrated semiotic resources using Machin’s Lyrics Analysis (2010) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar approach (2006). Both frameworks are methods for conducting multidisciplinary discourse-related research in the Multimodal Discourse Analysis field. Firstly, the text is examined using Machin's framework. After that, Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar is applied to the visual elements. This study demonstrates that the social criticisms in Bo Burnham: Inside are portrayed verbally through the structure of the discourse schema, the participants, the action and agency, and the settings and circumstances. Visually, it is described by the interplay of several modalities to present three meaning types: representational, interactive, and compositional. Through these meanings, the researcher identified the underlying messages regarding social issues. This study suggests that both visual and verbal analysis help to the comprehension of the contents of the comedy special and help viewers become more analytical of Bo Burnham’s intentions. Future researchers are advised to undertake an integrated and holistic analysis that also includes the nonlinguistic components, such as audial analysis (melody and pitch of the song).
