Most societies, if not all societies, in the world are under patriarchal system. This system has been running for a long period of time. The patriarchal society constructs the concept of ideal women. According to them, a woman can be called as an ideal woman only if she possesses several traits or characteristics. The structure of German fairy tales entitled Cinderella, Snow White, The Six Swans, The Twelve Brothers, and The Three Little Men in the Woods reveal how the heroine of each story possesses the ideal woman traits that are constructed by the society. Propp’s Narrative Structure and Dramatic Personae are used to analyze Cinderella, Snow White, The Six Swans, The Twelve Brothers, and The Three Little Men in the Woods because this research tries to find out the portrayal of ideal women through the structure of the chosen fairy tales. The objective of this research is to find out the portrayal of ideal women found in the structure of German fairy tales written by The Brothers Grimm. The result reveals that the traits of ideal women are portrayed by the heroine of each chosen story. The next researcher can compare the portrayal of ideal women in fairy tales with the portrayal of modern women by using feminism theory.
