Abstract

English Abstract

The bulls for artificial insemination must meet the requirements as superior bulls. Important parameters for bull assessment are libido and sperm production. The study aimed to determine the effect of sexual behavior on the sperm production on Ongole crossbred, Bali, Madura and Brahman bull. The study material was Ongole crossbred, Bali, Madura and Brahman bull each with 4 heads. The research method was observational by observing sexual behavior including libido length, ejaculation length, false mounting, and measurement of scrotal circumference. Laboratory observation by observing individual volume, concentration and motility to calculate total spermatozoa and total motile spermatozoa (TSM) per ejaculate, and testosterone levels. Observations were made in 10 replications. Data were analyzed descriptively and analysis of variance (ANOVA) using Randomized Block Design (RBD), as well as behavioral relationships and sperm production were known through Pearson correlation, and the effect was calculated by linear regression. The results showed that bull breeds gave a very significant difference (P<0.01) to sexual behavior and sperm production. The best libido lenght in Ongole crossbred bull of 0.67 ± 0.52 minutes. The highest ejaculation lenght was in Brahman bull with a time of 13.42 ± 8.50 minutes. The best false mounting in Ongole crossbred bull with an average of 2.43 ± 1.01. The four bulls are classified as good with average copulatory thrust ability, flank ability, and erection quality not significantly different (P>0.05). The highest total spermatozoa was found in Brahman bull with an amount of 8000.24 ± 2289.33 million / ejaculate. The highest TSM in Brahman cattle was 4,908.36 ± 1,494.30 million / ejaculate. Each parameter of sexual behavior shows the significance of different effects on the production of spermatozoa in each bull breed with the highest correlation coefficient and determination in Brahman bull. Based on the research, it can be concluded that sexual behavior has an effect on sperm production which can be used for selection of superior bulls.
