Abstract
Latar Belakang : Peranti ortodonti cekat merupakan peranti ortodonti yang paling banyak digunakan. Pemakaian peranti ortodonti cekat dapat menyebabkan impaksi makanan yang akan meningkatkan resiko karies. Kontrol plak yang paling sederhana dan efektif adalah menyikat gigi. Sikat gigi yang biasa digunakan pasien ortodonti cekat adalah sikat gigi konvensional dan sikat gigi ortodonti. Tujuan : Untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan sikat gigi ortodonti dibandingkan sikat gigi konvensional pada pasien peranti ortodonti cekat. Metode : Menentukan kata kunci, pencarian literatur dari database elektronik dengan metode Boolean Search, kemudian diseleksi dan penilaian untuk selanjutnya dilakukan review. Pembahasan : Berdasarkan 13 artikel tentang efektivitas sikat gigi konvensional dibandingkan dengan sikat gigi ortodonti yang dianalisis. Pasien peranti ortodonti cekat yang menggunakan sikat gigi ortodonti memiliki status kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang baik, gingiva yang sehat, dan tingkat karies yang lebih rendah. Pasien peranti ortodonti cekat direkomendasikan untuk menggunakan sikat gigi dengan bulu lembut (soft) dan juga menyikat gigi menggunakan teknik Modified Bass. Kesimpulan : Sikat gigi ortodonti lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan sikat gigi konvensional pada pasien peranti ortodonti cekat.
English Abstract
Fixed orthodontic appliances are the most commonly used orthodontic appliance. The used of fixed orthodontic appliances may cause food impaction, increasing the caries risk. The simplest and most effective plaque control is tooth brushing. The toothbrushes commonly used by patient using fixed orthodontic appliances are conventional toothrush and orthodontic toothbrush. Objective: To find out the effectiveness of conventional toothbrush compared with orthodontic toothbrush in patient using fixed orthodontic appliances. Method: Determining keywords, searching literature from electronic databases using the Boolean Search method, selecting and reviewing for the subsequent assessment. Discussion: Based on 13 articles about the effectiveness of conventional toothbrush compared with orthodontic toothbrush are analyzed. Patient with fixed orthodontic appliances using orthodontic toothbrushes have better oral and dental health status, healthier gingiva, and lower caries risk. Patient with fixed orthodontic appliances are recommended to used toothbrush with soft bristle and brushing their teeth with the Modified Bass technique. Conclusion: Orthodontic toothbrush is more effective than the conventional toothbrush in patient using fixed orthodontic appliances.
