Abstract

Latar belakang: Sebagian besar anak ASD di Indonesia memiliki oral hygiene buruk yang disebabkan oleh kesulitan menerima instruksi cara menyikat gigi. Mereka dinilai sebagai visual learner yang akan merespons lebih baik terhadap dukungan visual. Salah satu metode edukasi kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang dapat digunakan untuk anak ASD adalah Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Tujuan: untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan PECS dalam mengubah keterampilan menyikat gigi siswa dengan ASD di SLB Autis Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang. Metode: Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan adalah Single Subject Research (SSR) dengan pola A-B. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik non-probability dengan teknik purposive sampling. Jenis PECS yang digunakan adalah PECS berbentuk kartu. Penelitian ini melibatkan 7 orang responden yang diajarkan cara menyikat gigi menggunakan metode PECS selama 14 hari. Skor keterampilan menyikat gigi diukur dengan lembar observasi menyikat gigi yang berupa checklist. Analisis data menggunakan analisis visual. Analisis visual mempertimbangkan level stability, level change dan trend/slope untuk mengetahui perubahan tingkat keterampilan menyikat gigi siswa selama 14 hari penggunaan PECS. Hasil: skor menyikat gigi lima responden memiliki kecenderungan arah trend/slope mendatar. Skor menyikat gigi satu responden memiliki kecenderungan arah trend/slope menurun dengan dengan level change yang tidak signifikan yaitu sebesar 3,5%. Skor menyikat gigi satu responden memiliki kecenderungan arah trend/slope meningkat dengan level change sebesar 31%. Kesimpulan: Tidak terdapat perubahan keterampilan menyikat gigi yang signifikan pada enam orang responden, tetapi terdapat perubahan keterampilan menyikat gigi yang signifikan pada satu orang responden.

English Abstract

Introduction: Most children with ASD in Indonesia have poor oral hygiene due to difficulties in receiving instructions on how to brush their teeth. They were rated as visual learners who would respond better to visual support. One of oral health education methods that can be used for children with ASD is Picture Exchange Comunication System (PECS). Aim: to determine the effectiveness of using PECS in changing the tooth-brushing skills of students with ASD at at SD SLB Autis Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang. Methods: research design used was the Single Subject Research (SSR) with an A-B pattern. Sampling uses non-probability techniques with purposive sampling technique. The type of PECS used is card-shaped PECS. This study involved 7 respondents that were teach using the PECS method of how to brush their teeth for 14 days. Tooth-brushing skills were measured using tooth brushing observation sheets in the form of a checklist. Data analysis was perform using visual analysis with level change and trend/slope to find out the change in the student's tooth brushing skill level during the 14 days of using PECS. Results: The tooth-brushing scores of five respondents had a flat trend/slope. The tooth-brushing score of one respondent has a decline trend/slope with an insignificant level of change which is 3.5%. The tooth-brushing score of one respondent who has a ascend trend/slope with 31% level of change. Conclusion: There was no significant change in tooth-brushing skills in the six respondents, but there was a significant change in in tooth-brushing skill in one respondent.
