Abstract
English Abstract
One type of waste that dominates is plastic. Plastic is a synthetic polymer material made through a polymerization process. The number of human activities that involve the use of plastics in various types of cheap and multifunctional products, makes the presence of plastics increasing. Microplastics are plastic particles with a diameter of less than 5 mm. Its very small size can accidentally be eaten by aquatic biota. The Metro River is a basin block for the Brantas river basin and the upstream Brantas watershed. The Metro River is a source of water for community activities. The number of activities around this river will increase the amount of plastic waste and if it is thrown into water bodies, it will have the potential to break down plastic waste into small pieces (microplastics). The purpose of this study was to determine the presence, type, and abundance of microplastics found in sediments in the Metro River, and to determine the distribution of microplastic pollution on the presence of microplastics found in sediments in the Metro River. Three samples were taken at three points and each sample was repeated three times. The filters used were nylon sieves measuring 420 m, 250 m, and 177 m. Microplastic analysis in this study used an Olympus SZX16 microscope. The results of the research conducted proved the presence of microplastic content in the Metro River. Several types of microplastics were found, namely fiber with the most dominant amount of 75%, fragments of 21%, and film with the least amount of only 4%. While the color of microplastics found was black which was the most dominant color with a percentage of 53.01%, clear 33.12%, yellow 7.49%, orange 1.92%, blue 1.67%, red 1.50%, and green is the color with the least percentage found at only 1.29%. In the size of the nylon filter used, the size of 177 m had the highest number of microplastics, namely 55%, the filter size of 250 m filtered out microplastic particles as much as 26.6%, and the size of the nylon filter 420 m was the nylon filter with the least number of microplastics filtered, which was 17.7% particles. The highest abundance of microplastics based on research results was found at point three or the downstream part of the Metro River
