Canora, Salma Desra and drh. Dian Vidiastuti, M.Si. (2021) Perbandingan Efek Anestetik Ketamine–Xylazine dan Ketamine– Medetomidine pada Biawak (Varanus salvator). Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
The selection of anesthetic drugs in monitor lizards must be considered carefully to produce a safe and maximum effect. Ketamine is often used in reptiles that can be combined with xylazine or medetomidine in order to improve the workability of ketamine. This study aimed to determine the effect of ketamine-xylazine and ketamine-medetomidine based on the onset, duration of anesthesia, heart rate, and respiration rate in monitor lizards. Eighteen 1-year-old monitor lizards with a body length of 40 – 50 cm were divided into 2 treatment groups. The first treatment was injected with ketamine-xylazine 40 mg/Kg BW and 1 mg/Kg BW intramuscularly. The second treatment was injected with ketamine-medetomidine 10 mg/Kg BW and 0.1 mg/kg BW intramuscularly. The onset, duration of anesthesia, heart rate, and respiration rate were measured before injection until the animal regained consciousness every 10 minutes. The research data were analyzed using an independent T-test with a confidence level of 95%. The results showed that giving ketamine–xylazine and ketamine–medetomidine to monitor lizards had a significantly different (P <0.05) on the onset, heart rate, and respiration rate, but not significantly different (P> 0.05) on the duration of anesthesia. Ketamine-xylazine produced onset (5.5 minutes), duration of anesthesia (145 minutes), heart rate (57.7 bpm), and respiration rate (9.4 beats/minute). Ketamine–medetomidine produced onset (3.6 minutes), duration of anesthesia (150 minutes), heart rate (51.9 bpm), and respiration rate (15.5 beats/minute). This study concludes that giving the anesthetic ketamine–medetomidine in monitor lizards results in a faster onset, longer duration, decrease in heart rate, and increase in respiration rate compared with ketamine–xylazine.
