Abstract

Penelitian sebelumnya telah mencoba menganalisa bagaimana media Indonesia memberitakan isu terkait Cina. Tetapi, penelitian yang mencoba membandingkan bagaimana media dari kedua negara memberitakan isu yang berhubungan dengan kedua negara belum pernah dilakukan. Karenanya, penelitian ini mencoba untuk mencari tahu bagaimana media Indonesia dan media Cina menggambarkan situasi pandemi COVID-19 serta apa saja topik/isu terkait virus corona yang sering dibahas oleh kedua media tersebut. Teori Corpus-assisted Critical Discourse Analysis yang menggabungkan metode kuantitatif dan kualitatif pun digunakan untuk menjawab kedua pertanyaan tersebut. Hasilnya ditemukan bahwa masing masing media menggambarkan isu pandemi COVID-19 dengan cara yang berbeda. Dalam Januari hingga Maret 2020, The Jakarta Post menggambarkan pandemi COVID-19 sebagai suatu hal yang akan atau sedang terjadi. Di sisi lain, The Jakarta Post menggambarkan keparahan situasi yang terjadi sesuai dengan fakta yang ada. Selain itu, China Daily menggambarkan isu pandemi COVID-19 sebagai suatu hal yang tidak perlu dikhawatiri oleh masyarakat Cina. Berbeda dengan The Jakarta Post, China Daily tidak terlalu jelas menggambarkan keparahan situasi yang ada dalam artikel yang diterbitkan. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa ada lima topik terkait virus corona yang sering dibahas oleh The Jakarta Post dan China Daily. Peneliti menemukan isu medis, pihak berwenang, tindakan yang diambil oleh pihak berwenang, serta pihak dan tempat yang terdampak oleh pandemi COVID-19 sebagai isu yang paling sering dibahas oleh keduanya.

English Abstract

Previous research has tried to analyze Indonesian media’s coverage on China-related issue. However, a research that reveals how the two countries’ media reported or represented an issue involving both countries has not been done. This study aimed to find out how an Indonesian media—The Jakarta Post and a Chinese media—China Daily portray the issue of Coronavirus as well as what are the frequent topics and issues related to Coronavirus discussed by the two media. Corpus-assisted CDA which combines quantitative and qualitative methods was applied. The data being analyzed are news articles regarding coronavirus from each media’s website. As a result, it was found that each media portrayed the issue of coronavirus in a different way. From January to March 2020, The Jakarta Post portrayed coronavirus either as something that could happen soon or something that is happening at the time. The Jakarta Post portrayed the severity of the situation as it is. Meanwhile, China Daily portrayed the issue as something that the Chinese citizens do not need to worry about. Contrasting with The Jakarta Post, China Daily did not really portray the severity of the situation. It was also found that there are five topics regarding Coronavirus that the two media discussed frequently. The topics were medical issues, the authorities, the measure taken by countries all over the globe, as well as the people and places affected by the Coronavirus situation.
