Abstract

English Abstract

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a collection of physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms that occur in 80-90% of reproductive women within 7-10 days before menstruation. The cause of PMS is still unknown yet, but hormonal factors, genetic, psychosocial, and lifestyle may have a role in the incidence of PMS. Women with PMS will have difficulty initiating sleep, failing to wake up at the specified time, increasing nightmares and generally experiencing decreased sleep quality in the late luteal phase. The research aims to analyze the association between PMS and sleep quality of nursing students, Faculty of Medicine, Brawijaya University. The research used descriptive correlational analytic with crosssectional approach as a research design. The total research sample was 78 respondents which were taken from technique of purposive sampling. A questionnaire was used as an instruments for collecting data. The results showed that 39 respondents (50%) had mild PMS symptoms, 30 respondents (39.7%) had moderate PMS symptoms, and 8 respondents (10.3%) had severe PMS symptoms. The research showed as many as 75 respondents (96.2%) experienced poor sleep quality and 3 respondents (3.8%) had good sleep quality. Further, this research used statistic test of Spearman's Rank Correlation to analyze the relation between those two variables. From the analysis, it shows that p-value 0.000<0.05 and correlation coefficient value 0.401. Those value indicate that there is a relation between PMS and sleep quality of female students in the level of moderate strength and positive tendency. In sum, this research concluded that severe PMS can worsen sleep quality of female students. It is recommended that female students take measures to reduce PMS symptoms and avoid risk factors that can worsen PMS symptoms or worsen sleep quality.
