Abstract
Penggambaran karakter wanita sebagai karakter utama dalam perfilman sangat menarik perhatian publik akhir-akhir ini bahkan beberapa di antaranya mencerminkan kepemimpinan yang hebat yang dilakukan oleh karakter wanita. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil disutradarai oleh Joachim Rønning menunjukkan tiga karakter wanita utama dengan menampilkan para sosok karakter wanita yang kuat, mandiri, dan mendominasi dengan menunjukkan kemampuan kepemimpinan mereka. Teori kepemimpinan feminis mengandung karakteristik kepemimpinan perempuan/laki-laki dan hubungannya dengan tiga karakter perempuan dalam Maleficent: Mistress of Evil sangat terlihat. Oleh karena itu, fokus tesis ini adalah pada penggambaran karakteristik kepemimpinan yang dilakukan oleh Maleficent, Aurora, dan Ratu Ingrith. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori kepemimpinan feminis oleh Srilatha Batliwala (2010) untuk mendapatkan jawaban atas topik masalah. Data diambil dengan mengambil beberapa adegan, dialog, narasi yang menggambarkan karakteristik kepemimpinan feminis dalam film. Hasil dari studi ini membuktikan bahwa ketiga karakter perempuan tidak menunjukkan semua elemen dari kepemimpinan feminis. Maleficent menggambarkan kepemimpinannya melalui kekuatan magis dan hak kelahirannya sebagai intrinsic dan extrinsic power-nya, dan menunjukkan principles of freedom of association, of expression, dan nonviolence. Maleficent juga menunjukkan value dari accountability dan peace. Pemimpin perempuan selanjutnya, Aurora, memperlihatkan principle dari accountable decision making, collective, consultative, voice for all individuals, dan nonviolence yang membuatnya menjadi seorang pemimpin yang bijaksana dan menciptakan lingkungan hidup yang ramah. Disisi lain, Ratu Ingrith menunjukkan kemampuannya dalam memimpin dengan kecerdasan dan kerja strategisnya yang membawa keberhasilan dalam membalas dendam kepada Maleficent. Ratu Ingrith adalah seorang pemimpin yang tegas dan menciptakan jarak yang besar antara dirinya dan bawahannya. Penemuan ini memberi acuan bahwa ketiga perempuan karakter dapat menunjukkan kemampuan mereka sebagai pemimpin, dan Ratu Ingrith sebagai antagonis dalam film, juga mengimplementasikan elemen kepemimpinan patriarki. Penyajian Ratu Ingrith sebagai antagonis dalam film telah meningkatkan kemungkinan untuk para peneliti yang lain untuk membahas misogini terhadap Maleficent dan wanita lain dalam film ini
English Abstract
The portrayal of female characters as the main characters in the movie/ film is gaining the public’s interest these days, even some of them reflecting a great leadership done by the female characters. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil directed by Joachim Rønning serves the three main female characters with their strong, independent, and dominating appearance showing their ability of leadership. The feminist leadership theory contains with the characteristics of female/male leadership and its relation with the three female characters in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is very much visible. Thus, the focus of this thesis will be on the portrayal of leadership characteristics done by Maleficent, Aurora, and Queen Ingrith. This study uses feminist leadership theory by Srilatha Batliwala (2010) to gain the answer to the problem of the study. The data were collected by capturing certain scenes, dialogues and narrations that show the characteristics of the female leaders in the movie. The result of this study show that the three female characters do not show all the characteristics of the feminist leadership. Maleficent depicts leadership with magical power and birthright as her intrinsic and extrinsic power, and she portrays the principles of freedom of association, of expression, and nonviolence. Maleficent also represents the values of accountability and peace. The next female leader, Aurora, represents the principles of accountable decision making, collective, consultative, voice for all individuals, and nonviolence, which result in her being a wise leader and making a friendly environment within the society. On the other hand, Queen Ingrith shows her ability to lead with her intelligence and strategic works which leads into her successful plan of revenge against Maleficent. Queen Ingrith is a strict leader and creates a big gap between herself and her subordinates. These findings suggest that the three female characters are able to portray their ability as leaders, with Queen Ingrith, who is an antagonist in this movie, also implementing elements of patriarchal leadership. Presenting Queen Ingrith as the antagonist in the movie has raised the possibility for other researchers to study misogyny against Maleficent and other women in this film.
