Abstract

Bahasa sangat penting bagi manusia. Untuk mengindari ancaman muka public orang lain, diperlukan strategi khusus. Disinilah strategi kesantunan digunakan. Fenomena semacam ini tidak hanya terjadi dalam percakapan nyata tetapi juga ada di film. Ada dua masalah dalam penelitian ini, pertama adalah jenis FTAs apa yang dilakukan oleh Will Schofield dan kedua jenis strategi kesantunan apa yang diterapkan oleh Will Schofield di film 1917. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan jenis FTAs dan strategi kesantunan yang dilakukan oleh Will Schofield. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan data yang digunakan adalah ucapan-ucapan Will Schofield di film. Untuk mengidentifikasi FTA dan strategi kesantunan, penulis menggunakan teori kesantunan dari Brown and Levinson (1987). Setelah melakukan analisis data, penulis menemukan 78 ucapan yang mengandung FTAs dan strategi kesantunan. Ada 50 FTAs, dimana 39 diantaranya adalah FTAs negative, dan 11 FTAs positif. Selanjutnya penulis menemukan bahwa terdapat 56 strategi kesantunan, yaitu 28 tindak tutur secara apa adanya, 16 kesantunan positif, 11 kesantunan negatif, 1 tidak tutur tidak langsung. Will Schofield Sebagian besar melakukan FTAs negatif untuk memerintah karakter lain karena rasa urgensinya. Dia juga menerapkan tindak tutur apa adanya pada senagian besar waktu dalam film. Alasan Will Schofield melakukan itu adalah untuk membuat pendengar lain mengerti niatnya dengan jelas. Alasan lainnya adalah karena pekerjaannya sebagai tentara membuatnya harus lugas. Penulis memiliki beberapa saran untuk peneliti selanjutnya yang ingin melakukan penelitian tentang FTAs dan strategi kesantunan, misalnya menggunakan ucapan karakter lain sebagai objek penelitian dalam film 1917. Sebagai alternatif, peneliti selanjutnya dapat melakukan penilitan dengan pendekatan kepustakaan.

English Abstract

Language is important to the human being. To avoid to threaten other’s public face, some strategy is needed. This is where the politeness strategy is used. These kinds of phenomena not only happened in real conversation but in the movie too. There are two problems of the study in this research, first is what kinds of FTAs are performed by Will Schofield in the 1917 and the second is what kinds of politeness strategies applied by Will Schofield in the 1917. This research aims to find the kinds of FTAs and politeness strategies performed by Will Schofield in the 1917. This research used a qualitative approach and the data used are Will Schofield’s utterances in the 1917. To identify FTAs and politeness strategy, the writer used Brown and Levinson Politeness Theory (1987). After conducting the data analysis, the writer found that 78 utterances contain FTAs and politeness strategy. There are 50 FTAs, which is 39 of them is negative FTAs, and 11 are positive FTAs. Furthermore, the writer found 56 politeness strategies, which are 28 bald on-record strategies, 16 positive politeness, 11 negative politeness, one offrecord. Most of the time, Will Schofield performed negative FTAs to order the other character because of his sense of urgency. He also applied bald on-record most of the time in the movie. The reason Will Schofield did that is to make the listener aware of his intention clearly. The other reason is that his occupation as a soldier made him straightforward. The writer has some suggestions for the next researcher who wants to research FTAs and politeness strategy, for example, using another character’s utterances as a research object in the 1917.
