Abstract

Dalam keluarga secara tradisional biasanya suami berperan memimpin rumah tangga sementara istri merawat anggota keluarga. Film Incredibles 2 yang disutradarai oleh Brad Bird menunjukkan perspektif lain dari keluarga pahlawan ketika suami dan istri bertukar peran. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori keluarga oleh Leeder (2004) dan konsep peran gender pada masyarakat Amerika oleh Blackstone (2003). Data dikumpulkan dari beberapa adegan dan dialog tertentu dalam film yang menunjukkan adanya perubahan peran gender dalam Keluarga Parr (pemeran utama film). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada dua peran yang tertukar dalam keluarga. Yang pertama adalah peran istri atau pengasuh yang sekarang dilakukan oleh Bob, sang suami, dan peran suami sebagai pencari nafkah yang dilakukan oleh Helen, sang istri. Peran lain yang terungkap dalam penelitian ini adalah Helen sebagai pelindung masyarakat karena pekerjaannya yang baru. Selain itu, film ini menggambarkan beberapa penolakan oleh kedua karakter, terutama pada diri Bob mengenai situasi baru yang mereka alami. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa film ini menegur sekaligus mencerminkan masyarakat Amerika saat ini, di mana ada kecenderungan untuk membalikkan peran gender tradisional dalam sebuah keluarga namun masyarakat masih berjuang untuk menerima perubahan tersebut. Untuk penelitian lebih lanjut, dimungkinkan untuk menganalisis peran gender yang dilakukan oleh karakter lain dari film tersebut, terutama anak-anak dari keluarga Parr.

English Abstract

Gender role in the family, traditionally shows that the husband usually leads the household while the wife takes care of the family members. The Incredibles 2 directed by Brad Bird shows another perspective of a regular family when the roles of husband and wife are reversed. This study uses Leeder’s (2004) theory of family and Blackstone’s (2003) concept of gender roles in American society. The data were collected from certain scenes and dialogues in the movie that show the reversal of gender roles in the Parr Family (the main characters of the movie).The result of this study shows that there are two roles that are reversed in the family. The first one is the role of caregiver that is now done by Bob, the husband, and the role of breadwinner is done by Helen, the wife. Another role exposed in the study is Helen as the protector of the society because of her new public role. In addition, the movie portrays some resistance by both characters, especially in Bob’s part regarding their new situation. These findings suggest that this movie both challenges and mirrors American society today, where there is a trend of reversing traditional gender roles in a family but the society is still struggling with accepting the changes. For further research, it is possible to analyze the gender roles assumed by the other characters of the film, especially the children of Parr family
