Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Vaginal candidiasis is a disease of the mucous membranes of the vagina that causes excessive vaginal discharge, itching and burning in the female area. As many as 70% of cases of candidiasis are caused by Candida albicans species. Vaginal candidiasis treatment commonly used is azole group of drugs. However, continuous use of antifungals can disrupt the balance of normal flora around the vaginal vulva, and can even lead to antifungal resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to develop safer and environmentally friendly treatments. One of the development of antifungals derived from natural ingredients is the use of papaya leaves. Papaya leaves have been shown to have antifungal activity by inhibiting the formation of cell walls resulting in leakage of cytoplasmic constituents. Aim:To prove the effectiveness of giving papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.) to the growth of Candida albicans based on the results of research that has been done. Methods: This study used a literature review design using 11 reputable research articles in the 2010 – 2020 period. Results: A study of 11 studies showed that papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.) had positive activity in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. Conclusion: Papaya leaves have effectiveness as antifungal against Candida albicans. This antifungal activity is influenced by active compounds, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenolic components, terpinoids, phytosterols, glycosides, carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids, and papaya leaf chlorophyll. Keywords: Candida albicans, papaya leaf, candidiasis vaginalis, vaginal discharge"
