Abstract

English Abstract

English as a foreign language has become increasingly important in Indonesia since it becomes a compulsory subject for Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools. In learning English, students need to master four basic language skills, they are listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Writing is considered as the most difficult skill to be mastered because of its complexity. Teaching writing is not an easy task for teacher. English teachers should be creative in developing materials or strategy to improve students’ writing skill. This study was carried out to improve students’ writing ability through comic strips at the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Porong in the academic year 2014/ 2015. The subjects of this study was VIII-F class consisted of 32 students. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) by following Kemmis and McTaggart model. The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class. In this study, the researcher used the theories proposed by Harmer. The study was carried out in one cycle which consisted of four meetings. The data were gathered in this study through interview guide, field notes, questionnaire, observation checklist and test. Furthermore, the result of the study indicated that comic strips was successful in improving students’ writing in recount text. The improvement could be seen from the pre-test score that there were 40,6 % or 13 out of 32 students could not pass minimum score 75, then it increased into 78% or 25 out of 32 students could achieve the minimum score. In addition, it was found from the average score of students’ observation checklist that there were 80% students participated actively. Related to the result of field notes, questionnaire and interview, it was found that the students gave good responses in the teaching and learning process. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of comic strips had improved the students’ achievement in writing recount text. Furthermore, this study also offers several suggestions. It is recommended that English teachers can be more creative and innovative in using various kinds of interesting teaching media. The students are also suggested to practice writing so they will be more skillful in writing. For the researchers who intend to conduct the study more detail about the implementation of comic strips for improving teaching writing can use this study as reference in different research design, or language skill, or even genres
