Abstract

English Abstract

Several reports have suggested a connection between vitamin D deficiency and type 1 diabetes. Vitamin D deficiency is caused by vitamin D intake, sun exposure, and nutritional status. Indonesia is a tropical country with sunshine all of the year. There are limited data about vitamin D status in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes in Indonesia. We conducted this study to determine whether the sun exposure and nutritional status is related to vitamin D levels. A total of 31 children and adolescents aged 5-19 years were enrolled in this analitycal cross-sectional study. Sun exposure were determined using a Sun Exposure Questionnaire (SEQ), nutritional status was determined using WHO Anthro program with BMI/U Index, and vitamin D level was determined using ELISA method. Statistical analysis used correlation test with SPSS V21.0 for Windows. Results showed all subjects were vitamin D deficient (100.0%), most respondents had less sun exposure (64.5%), 74% respondents were in the normoweight category. There is a significant positive correlation between sun exposure and vitamin D levels (p = 0.001; r = 0.627). However there is no relationship between nutritional status and vitamin D levels (p = 0.852). Although Indonesia has sunshine all of the year vitamin D deficiency is common among type 1 diabetes children and adolescents, and influenced by sun exposure. Therefore, screening for vitamin D deficiency, creating awareness to increase sunlight exposure, for these patients should be warranted to prevent future complications and morbidity.
