Abstract

English Abstract

The development of phytotheraphy or herbal medicine nowadays is getting more important as a way of curing & preventing a disease. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) Kawi Mountain Cultivar has become a plant of choice due to its nutritional value and known to contain Anthocyanin as one of the major substances. Anthocyanin known to have variety of advantageable effects such as lowering lipid profile; total cholesterol and triglycerides with a down regulation mechanism of HMG CoA reductase. The main purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the sub-chronic effect of ethanol extract of Ipomoea batatas L. towards changes in TC and TG level in white Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) as a step on developing safety profile of the upcoming herbal drug. Ethanol extract were exposed for 90 days (sub chronic) in total with a normal diet in 3-exposed dosage groups (10,20 and 40 mg/kgBW) and control group with 10 female and 10 male rats in each dosage group. The results show that both TC and TG of all control and exposed groups are in normal range. The normal range reference for rats are 40-130 mg/dl in cholesterol level and 26-145 mg/dl for triglycerides. There is no significant change in cholesterol levels of female& male rat. There are significant changes in male rat’s triglycerides within dose 10-20 mg/kgBW & 10-40 mg/kgBW. In general, all dosed-exposed group (10,20 and 40 mg/kgBW) are considered safe since values are within normal range. Thus, sub-chronic exposure of ethanol extract of Ipomoea batatas L. is safe.
