Abstract

English Abstract

Sand depth is a success factor in hatching sea turtle eggs and hatchling conditions that are produced because it affects the temperature of nest incubation. This study aims to determine the effect of sand depth on the success of turtle egg hatching, hatchling size and forearm length for sex determination. Collecting young turtle eggs was carried out by monitoring. Observation of hatchability of eggs was carried out by planting 10 eggs for one semi-natural nest with three treatments of sand depth and three repetitions, namely 25 cm, 30 cm, and 45 cm deep. Hatchlings and egg categories were observed for the determination of hatching success. Observation of the environmental factors of semi-natural nests is done by measuring the temperature of sand, sand moisture, and the size of sand. Hatchling morphometrics and the length of the front arm are measured to determine the sex of the hatchlings. Data on percentage of hatching rate, survival rate, sex ratio, and hatchling morphometric data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey test. The depth of the sand affects the success of turtle egg hatching, the size of the hatchlings and the species. The 30 cm depth has the highest percentage of tetas success because it has the optimal temperature and humidity. The 45 cm depth has the largest hatchling size because it has a masculine temperature so that the incubation period is longer and many yolk are converted into hatchlings and produce a larger body size. The sex ratio at a depth of 25 cm in total was entirely female and at a depth of 45 cm the total total was male, while at a depth of 30 cm there was predicted to be female and male.
