Abstract

Kosakata adalah kumpulan kata yang harus dikuasai oleh pelajar Bahasa. Jadi, penguasaan kosakata menjadi dasar dari proses belajar Bahasa. Penelitian ini diadakan untuk menyelidiki proses belajar kosakata secara otonom oleh seorang pelajar otonom dari sekolah menengah pertama yang memiliki level kosakata yang tinggi. Peneliti berfokus pada penelusuran strategi yang paling sering digunakan, aktifitas mendetail dan peran orang tua dalam aktifitas tersebut. Detail aktifitas dan peran orang tua belum disebutkan dalam beberapa penelitian sebelumnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan desain penelitian studi kasus. Tiga instrumen digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data dalam penelitian ini, yaitu: (1) Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire oleh Schmitt (2000); (2) Pedoman wawancara dari teori milik Benson’s (1997) tentang pelajar otonom; (3) Dokumen yang berupa catatan lapangan hasil observasi. Hasil dari penelitin ini menunjukan bahwa pelajar otonom menggunakan DET strategies sebagai strategi belajar kosakatanya dan menggunakan film sebagai media pembelajarannya untuk menambah penguasaan kosakatanya dan meningkatkan level kosakatanya. Proses belajarnya difasilitasi dan diawasi oleh orangtuanya. Orang tua hanya berfungsi sebagai pemberi fasilitas dan pengawas dalam proses belajar tanpa mencampurinya. Pelajar otonom terbukti berhasil dalam proses belajarnya berdasarkan pencapaian sekolahnya yang dapat dilihat dari rapor sekolah. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa karakteristik DET strategies mendukung karakter pelajar otonom yang mana belajar tanpa bantuan dari orang lain. Meskipun pelajar tidak membutuhkan bantuan dari orang lain, namun dukungan dan fasilitas dari orang tua penting dalam proses belajar. English Abstract

Vocabulary is a set of words to be mastered by language learner. Thus, vocabulary mastery become the fundamental of language learning process. This study was conducted to investigate the autonomous vocabulary learning process by an autonomous learner of a junior high school who has high vocabulary level. The researcher focused on discovering the most used strategies, the detailed activity and parent’s role in the activity. Detailed activity and parent’s role had not been mentioned in some previous studies. This study used qualitative approach and case study research design. Three instruments were used to collect the data in this study, those are: (1) Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire by Schmitt (2000); (2) Interview Guideline from Benson’s (1997) theory about autonomous learner; (3) Observation field notes. The result of this study shows that the autonomous learner uses DET learning strategies as his vocabulary learning strategies and uses movie as his learning media to enhance his vocabulary mastery and increase his vocabulary level. His learning process is facilitated and supervised by his parent. Parent only served as a facilitator and supervisor in the learning process without interfering it. The autonomous learner is proven to be success in his learning process by his school achievement which can be seen from the school report card. The researcher concluded that DET strategies characteristic support the autonomous learner character which is learning without helping from other. Even though the learner did not need help from other, yet support and facilities from parent are important in the learning process.
