Abstract
Penelitian ini menggunakan rambut Afro sebagai objek penelitian, dikarenakan rambut Afro ini banyak menggambarkan interaksi antara rambut Afro dengan masyarakat USA. Melalui peran rambut Afro yang muncul di beberapa video, dapat menunjukkan bagaimana fashion dan identitas budaya dikonstruksi dan dibedakan melalui rambut. Dapat berguna juga untuk menunjukkan pengaruh terhadap komunitas orang kulit hitam melalui bagaimana cara masyarakat terutama industri fashion memperlakukan rambut Afro. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk menemukan bukti akan konstruksi identitas dan diskriminasi dalam komunitas orang kulit hitam melalui rambut Afro yang berada di beberapa video. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kajian budaya karya sastra dikarenakan isi dari penelitian ini menyajikan interaksi budaya antara manusia dan rambut Afro. Diskriminasi turut digunakan untuk memberikan penjelasan yang komprehensif terkait tentang rambut Afro. Terakhir, teori tentang fashion dan kajian budaya akan digunakan untuk menguatkan ide penulis ketika sedang menganalisa hasil temuan penelitian, dikarenakan fokus penelitian ini membahas isu tentang fashion dan identitas budaya. Secara ringkas, masing-masing gaya rambut Afro memiliki kepercayaan yang berhubungan dengan kebudayaan dan nilai-nilai budaya. Baik berupa adat istiadat dalam sebuah komunitas maupun kebiasaan yang dibentuk oleh sebuah komunitas. Rambut Afro juga turut mempengaruhi bagaiman masyarakat melihat status sosial atau suku seseorang. Jenis rambut mereka dapat dijadikan tolak ukur status sosial atau suku mereka. Komunitas orang non-kulit hitam yaitu orang kulit putih, sering menggunakan rambut Afro hanya untuk fashion tanpa mengetahui dan percaya pada kepercayaan yang berhubungan dengan kebudayaan mereka. Komunitas orang kulit hitam dipaksa untuk merubah atau memotong rambut natural mereka sedangkan orang kulit putih dipuji oleh publik dan industri fashion karena memakai rambut Afro. Rambut Afro juga dianggap aneh, tidak profesional, tidak sesuai dengan standard kecantikan, dll.
English Abstract
This thesis used a Afro-Hairstyle as the object of the study, because it portrays the interaction between Afro-hairstyle and the society of USA especially in Fashion Industry. Through the role of Afro-hairstyle that appears in the videos, it shows how fashion and cultural identity can be constructed and distinguished through hairstyle. It is also shows how society especially the fashion industry treated Afro-hairstyle give impact on black community. The objective of this is study to discover the construction of cultural identity and discrimination on Black community through Afro-hairstyle in the videos. The approach used is Cultural Studies in literature as it explains the cultural interaction between Afro-hairstyle and human. Discrimination is also used in this study to provide a comprehensive analysis of Afro-hairstyle. Lastly, both theories of fashion and cultural studies are used to strengthen the writer’s idea when examining the research findings, since this thesis focuses on both fashion and cultural identity issues. In sum, the style of Afro-hairstyle each have a cultural belief and values. Whether it is the custom that is created by a particular community or habitual concept that is constructed by the community. Afro-hairstyle also affects how people see their social status or group. The style of their hairstyle represent their social status and their group. The non-black community that are white people, tend to use it only for fashion without knowing and believing the cultural belief. Black community were being forced to change or cut their natural hair while white people get praised by the public and fashion industry for wearing it. Afrohairstyle also considered as weird, uprofessional, does not fit the beauty standard, etc.
