Abstract
English Abstract
This study discusses the commodity of oil palm which is currently widely planted or cultivated by the people of Petung Village, East Kalimantan. The author wants to explain the impact caused by the oil palm commodity on aspects of people's lives. The high value of selling oil palm causes many changes for farmers, one of which is an increase in income. Based on this the author would like to emphasize the discussion through the question: What are the implications for the ecology and social economic changes due to the commodification of rice fields into oil palm plantations?. This research is a qualitative research using ethnographic methods and data collection techniques including observation, intensive interviews, and documentation. The concept or theory used in the discussion comes from Karl Polanyi who discusses the commodification that occurs due to market demand. In analyzing the data, the authors used narrative analysis from Bernard Russel to find the regularity of the data to be presented in ethnographic writing. Commodification of agricultural land into oil palm plantations occurs due to environmental conditions that have decreased so that the amount of agricultural production in paddy also declined. The presence of the oil palm commodity was considered by the community to bring economic benefits so that some farmers began to plant oil palm on privately owned land. At present the oil palm plantations owned by the community are very easy to find in Petung Village, which indirectly brings several changes. In the ecological aspect of oil palm, the impact of the presence of potential environmental damage due to the absorption of oil palm to water that is high enough to cause drought. In addition, chemicals derived from fertilizers and pesticides increase the potential for soil damage due to the presence of oil palm. The suitability of the land and climate for planting oil palm indirectly makes the selling price of land in the Petung Village have increased. The characteristics of oil palm which are individualist plants seem to affect the lives of farmers while in the garden. This is illustrated by the amount of labor needed in oil palm plantations is not as much as in other agricultural lands
