Abstract

Mitos larangan pernikahan antara suku Jawa dengan suku Sunda yang hadir sejak dahulu kala menjadi topik yang terus dibicarakan oleh masyarakat secara turun-temurun. Pada awalnya, mitos ini diyakini muncul akibat adanya peristiwa Perang Bubat yang terjadi pada tahun 1357. Namun, seiring dengan berjalannya waktu, mitos ini dihadapkan pada banyaknya perubahan-perubahan yang terdapat dalam masyarakat. Adanya bentuk rasionalisasi atas mitos yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat kemudian menjadikan mitos ini memiliki dua kedudukan utama, yakni mitos sebagai simbol dan mitos sebagai suatu kesadaran mitis. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini memiliki dua rumusan masalah. Pertama, bagaimana respons masyarakat Batutulis terhadap mitos larangan pernikahan Jawa-Sunda. Kedua, faktor-faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi masyarakat Batutulis dalam merespons mitos ini. Dua rumusan masalah tersebut juga menjelaskan bagaimana pemahaman masyarakat terhadap mitos itu sendiri. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan etnografi sebagai metode penelitiannya. Teknik dalam mengumpulkan data dilakukan dengan cara wawancara, observasi, studi literatur kuno dan modern, serta dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa respons masyarakat Batutulis terhadap mitos ini didasari pada kedudukan mitos. Ketika kedudukan mitos dipahami sebagai suatu simbol, maka respons yang dikeluarkan oleh masyarakat adalah wacana-wacana terkait stereotip, ekonomi dan agama. Wacana-wacana tersebut digunakan oleh masyarakat untuk melegitimasi ataupun mendelegitimasi mitos. Lebih jauh, wacana-wacana ini juga digunakan untuk mendukung tindakan yang mereka lakukan. Hal ini juga berpengaruh pada melemahnya kekuatan dari mitos tersebut. Namun ketika terdapat kondisi dimana ancaman dari pelanggaran mitos ini benar-benar terjadi, seluruh wacana-wacana yang terdapat sebelumnya seketika menghilang dan akhirnya menyadari bahwa mitos tersebut benar-benar bekerja dalam masyarakat. Hal ini terjadi pada saat mitos berkedudukan sebagai suatu kesadaran mitis dan membuat mitos ini kembali menguat. Seluruh praktek masyarakat dalam merespons mitos ini merupakan hasil dari discourse shopping.

English Abstract

The myth of marriage prohibition between Javanese and Sundanese that has existed since a long time ago has become a topic that continues to be discussed by the community for generations. At first, this myth is believed to appear as a result of the Bubat War which happened in 1357. However, as time goes by, this myth faces many changes which happened in the community. A form of rationalization of the myth created by the community makes this myth have two main positions, myth as a symbol and myth as a mythic consciousness. Therefore, this study has two research problems. First, how is the response of Batutulis community toward the myth of Javanese-Sundanese Marriage Prohibition. Second, what are the factors that influence the Batutulis community in response to this myth. These two research problems also explain people‘s understanding of the myth itself. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnography as its method of research. The techniques in collecting data are interviews, observation, old and modern literature study, as well as documentation. The results of this study indicate that the response of Batutulis community toward this myth is based on a mythical position. When the mythical position is understood as a symbol, then the response issued by the community is discourses related to stereotypes, economic, and religion. These discourses are used by the community to legitimize or delegitimize the myth. Furthermore, these discourses are also used to support their actions. This also affects the weakening of the myth‘s power. However, when there is a condition in which a threat of this myth violation happens, all the discourses that previously existed immediately disappear and is finally realized that the myth is actually functioning in the community. This happens when the myth has a position as a mythic consciousness and makes this myth strong again. The whole practices of the community in response to this myth are the result of discourse shopping.
