Abstract
Penggunaan kesopanan sebagai strategi komunikasi sangat diperlukan dalam setiap jenis komunikasi, terutama komunikasi publik seperti talk show. Karena itu, penelitian ini mencoba untuk menganalisa penggunaan strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh James Corden dan Michelle Obama dalam acara The Late Late Night Show with James Corden. Permasalahan yang diajukan adalah; (1) Apa jenis strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh Michelle Obama dan James Corden dalam The Late Late Night Show with James Corden? (2) Apa faktor yang mempengaruhi Michelle Obama dan James Corden untuk memilih jenis strategi kesopanan?. Teori yang digunakan untuk menganalisa data adalah teori strategi kesopanan dari Brown dan Levinson (1987). Metode yang digunakan untuk melakukan penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif-kualitatif karena kemampuannya yang baik untuk menjelaskan masalah dari penelitian ini. Penulis menemukan 45 ucapan, yang hanya berisi kesopanan positif, semua strategi kesopanan positif yang ditemukan yaitu; notice, attend to H (7), exaggerate (5), intensify interest to H (6), use in-group identity markers (4), seek agreement (2), avoid disagreement (2), presuppose/raise/assert common ground (1), jokes (9), include both S and H in the activity (4), give gifts to H (5). Strategi ‘jokes’ adalah strategi yang sering digunakan oleh James Corden dan Michelle Obama. Penulis menemukan 3 faktor yang mempengaruhi Michelle Obama dan James Corden dalam menggunakan kesopanan positif. Mereka adalah payoffs (18), social distance (25), dan power (2). Faktor yang paling dominan mempengaruhi penggunaan strategi kesopanan adalah social distance. Penelitian yang akan datang disarankan untuk menggunakan rumusan masalah yang sama namun dalam lingkungan atau konteks yang berbeda untuk memperluas area penelitian. Studi serupa dapat dilakukan dengan menggunakan teori yang berbeda untuk menghasilkan temuan baru, seperti teori kesopanan yang diajukan oleh Leech, Scollon atau Lakoff.
English Abstract
The use of politeness as communication strategies is absolutely needed in every kind of communication, especially public communication such as talk show. Thus, this study attempts to analyze the use of politeness strategies employed by James Corden and Michelle Obama in The Late Late Night Show with James Corden. The problems proposed are; (1) What types of politeness strategies are used by both Michelle Obama and James Corden in The Late Late Night Show with James Corden? (2) What are the factors influencing Michelle Obama and James Corden to choose kinds of politeness strategies?. The teory that is used to analyze the data is politeness strategy theory by Brown and Levinson (1987). The method used to conduct this study is descriptive-qualitative method because of its legitimate capability to explain the research problems of this research. The writer found 45 utterances, which contain only positive politeness, all the positive politeness strategies found are; notice, attend to H (7), exaggerate (5), intensify interest to H (6), use in-group identity markers (4), seek agreement (2), avoid disagreement (2), presuppose/raise/assert common ground (1), jokes (9), include both S and H in the activity (4), give gifts to H (5). The strategy ‘jokes’ is the highest strategies used by James Corden and Michelle Obama. The writer found 3 factors influenced Michelle Obama and James Corden to use positive politeness. They are payoffs (18), social distance (25), and power (2). The most dominant factors influencing the use of politeness strategies is social distance. Further researchers that will conduct similar research or to select this current study as the previous study are encouraged to address the same research problem but in a different settings or context to expand the area of investigation. A similar study can be conducted using a new theory to invent new varied findings and result, such as politeness theories proposed by Leech, Scollon or Lakoff.
