Abstract
The Unit adalah sebuah novel karya Ninni Holmqvist di tahun 2006. Novel ini memberikan gambaran tentang kondisi masa depan ketika masyarakat yang menua mendapat perlakuan buruk dari pihak berwenang. Tokoh utama novel ini adalah Dorrit Weger, seorang wanita lansia yang tidak menikah dan dibawa ke panti bernama The Unit. Yaitu sebuah tempat bagi mereka yang dianggap nonproduktif, tempat ini dipenuhi kenyamanan dan berbagai fasilitas namun di lain sisi juga sarat akan pengawasan. Di sini, setiap penghuninya harus menjalani pelbagai eksperimen seperti halnya mendonasikan organ tubuh hingga akhir hidup mereka. Riset ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa krisis yang dihadapi masyarakat menua lewat sisi internal dan eksternal di tempat yang tidak manusiawi sebagaimana tergambarkan dalam novel The Unit. Pendekatan gerontologi sosial digunakan untuk menganalisa kejadian-kejadian yang dialami tokoh yang terdapat di The Unit seperti kerentanan, kehilangan, kekecewaan, isolasi sosial, hingga perlakuan yang kasar. Riset ini mengungkap bahwa mereka yang dianggap sebagai beban pada suatu masyarakat berpeluang untuk diberdayakan dalam propaganda pemerintahan. Sebagai konklusi, riset ini ditujukan untuk meningkatkan wawasan akan keberadaan lansia sehingga pada akhirnya hal ini dapat mencegah diskriminasi yang didasari oleh faktor usia.
English Abstract
The Unit written by Ninni Holmqvist in 2006 is a novel portraying nearfuture condition that the ageing citizens are put down by malpractice agendas under the authoritarian control. This novel tells about Dorrit Weger, an unmarried woman who is taken into an isolated place called The Unit. It is such an unordinary nursing home for unproductive elders that is fulfilled with conveniences yet monitored continually. Its residents, known as the dispensable, must participate in certain experiments to donate their organs until they make a final contribution to end their lives. The objective of this study is to analyze the ageing society life crises caused by both the internal and the external aspects under malicious circumstance as portrayed in The Unit novel. Social gerontology is applied to analyze the occurrences faced by the residents of The Unit such as vulnerability, loss, grief, social exclusion, and abusive control. This study reveals that those who are regarded as a burden in society can be subjected to secluded propaganda held by the government. At the conclusion, it is inferred on how important to uplift the awareness about the existence of the elderly in order to overcome age discrimination.
