Abstract

Generasi pertama imigran cenderung berpegang teguh pada budaya asal mereka. Mimikri dan ambivalensi sebagai efek pascakolonialisme dapat digunakan sebagai cara untuk beradaptasi. Namun, westernisasi dapat terjadi karena yang dijajah telah berhasil meniru para penjajah. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana Rachel Chu dan Nick Young sebagai representasi generasi pertama dari budaya Cina digambarkan sebagai orang Cina-Amerika yang telah mengalami westernisasi dalam novel Crazy Rich Asians karya Kevin Kwan. Crazy Rich Asians karya Kevin Kwan dipilih sebagai objek material penelitian karena efek kolonialisasi dalam konteks westernisasi adalah salah satu masalah sosial yang saat ini terjadi di masyarakat, terutama di Amerika. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan pascakolonial terhadap sastra dalam menganalisis data. Sumber data primer adalah percakapan yang dipilih yang diucapkan oleh karakter beserta narasi yang ada di dalam novel Crazy Rich Asians. Subjek yang dipilih adalah Rachel Chu dan Nick Young sebagai representasi dari generasi pertama orang Cina-Amerika. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada beberapa jejak pascakolonial. Salah satunya adalah gerakan diaspora yang terjadi pada keluarga Rachel dan Nick. Hal ini menyebabkan mereka harus tumbuh besar di negara-negara barat. Dalam prosesnya, baik Rachel maupun Nick mengalami westernisasi dan berhasil meniru beberapa prinsip orang Amerika seperti kebebasan individu, privasi, keterusterangan, kesetaraan, dan informalitas. Konsep ambivalensi terjadi pada Nick karena ia mengetahui bahwa ada perbedaan besar antara budaya barat dan budaya Cina. Akibatnya, Rachel dan Nick gagal memahami budaya Cina yang meliputi aturan, prinsip, dan etika tertentu yang masih dipatuhi orang tua mereka. Penulis menyarankan peneliti berikutnya untuk menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi untuk menemukan adanya stereotip terhadap orang Cina-Amerika dalam novel ini.

English Abstract

The first generation of immigrants usually have a tendency to hold strongly to their former culture. Mimicry and ambivalence as the effect of postcolonialism can be used as a form of adaptation. However, westernization happened because the colonized has succesfully mimic the colonizers. Thus, this research aims to find out how Rachel Chu and Nick Young as the representation of first generation from Chinese culture are portrayed as westernized Chinese-American in the novel Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan is chosen as the material object of the study because the effect of colonialization in terms of westernization is one of the current social problems happening in the society, especially in America. The researcher used the postcolonial approach to literature in analyzing the data. The primary data source is the selected conversation that are uttered by the characters as well as the narratives from the novel Crazy Rich Asians. The chosen subjects are Rachel Chu and Nick Young as the representatives of the first generation of Chinese-Americans. The result of this research reveals that there are several traces of postcolonialism. One of which is the diasporic movement that happens to Rachel and Nick’s families. It causes them to grow up in Western countries. In the process, both of them are becoming more westernized and have succesfully mimic the American values which are individual freedom, privacy, directness, equality and informality. The concept of ambivalency happens to Nick because he knows that there are major differences between the Western culture and the Chinese culture. In result, they fail to understand the Chinese culture that involve certain rules, values, and etiquettes that their parents still adhere. The researcher encouraged the next researcher to use the sociological approach to find the stereotype against Chinese-Americans in this novel.
