Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui korelasi antara penguasaan kosakata dan pemahaman membaca pada siswa sekolah Islam. Membaca adalah proses kognitif yang melibatkan pembangunan makna kata. Pembangunan makna dilakukan dengan mengetahui makna kata. Kata yang dimaksud adalah kosakata yang ada dalam pemeblajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode korelasional. Populasi penelitian ini merupakan semua siswa kelas VIII SMPI Sabilurrosyad Malang yang terdiri dari 43 siswa. Ada dua instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu tes penguasaan kosakata dan tes membaca pemahaman. Data dalam penelitian ini dihitung dengan menggunakan rumus Korelasi Order Spearman Rank pada SPSS v.21. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa koefisien korelasi (rvalue) lebih tinggi dari rtabel pada taraf signifikan 5% atau 0,05 (rvalue> rtable = 0,703> 0,304) yang berarti terdapat korelasi yang sangat positif antara dua variabel. Kemudian, nilai tvalue dibandingkan dengan ttable untuk mengetahui apakah korelasinya dapat diterima atau tidak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tvalue lebih tinggi dari ttable (tvalue > ttable = 6.251> 2.021) di mana korelasi antara dua variabel signifikan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada korelasi yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosakata dan membaca pemahaman pada siswa sekolah Islam. Saran untuk peneliti selanjutnya yaitu diharapkan dapat menguunakan metode yang berbeda dan memperluas populasi penelitian.

English Abstract

The aim of this study was to reveal the correlation between EFL Islamic school students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. Reading defines as a cognitive process that involves constructing meaning of the texts. Constructing meaning is done by knowing the meaning of words. Word is called vocabulary items in learning English. This study used quantitative approach with correlational design. The populations of this study were all the students of the 8th graders of SMPI Sabilurrosyad Malang consisting of 43 students. There were two instruments used in this study which were vocabulary mastery test and reading comprehension test. The data was calculated by using Spearman Rank Order Correlation formula in SPSS v.21. The result showed that the correlation coefficient (rvalue) was higher than rtable at the significant level 5% or 0.05 (rvalue > rtable = 0.703 > 0.304) which means there is a highly positive correlation between two variables. Then, the tvalue was compared with the ttable to know to find out whether the correlation can be accepted or not. The result showed that tvalue was higher than ttable (tvalue > ttable = 6.251 > 2.021) in which the correlation between two variables was significant. It can be concluded that there is a positive correlation between EFL Islamic school students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. The suggestion is that the further researcher supposed to use different research design and widen the population of the research to produce the better result of the research.
