Abstract
Film The Great Wall merupakan film hasil kerja sama antar dua negara, yaitu Cina dan Amerika. Film ini mengangkat nilai-nilai budaya Cina yang dipraktekkan oleh tokoh Cina saat menghadapi masalah Tao Tei di kerajaannya. Dalam proses analisis, nilai-nilai budaya Cina dalam penelitian ini akan merepresentasikan budaya Timur karena tokoh barat dalam film ini hanya merepresentasikan nilai-nilai Barat secara umum. Maka dari itu, rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahu nilai-nilai budaya Cina yang diangkat sebagai representasi nilai budaya Timur. Pendekatan sosiologi pada karya sastra akan digunakan untuk mengetahui bagaimana nilai budaya Cina dipraktekan oleh tokoh Cina sebagai pedoman aktifitas mereka sebagai kelompok dari sebuah budaya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada tiga nilai budaya Cina yang diangkat dalam film. Pertama, masyarakat Cina menghargai harmoni dan mereka berusaha untuk mendapatkan harmoni tersebut melalu kerja sama tim yang kuat. Kedua, mereka memiliki sifat kolektif sebagai bentuk kebajikan terhadap sesama anggota kelompoknya. Ketiga, mereka selalu memiliki kehormatan dan kesopanan yang tinggi terhadap penguasa. Kesimpulannya, film The Great Wall ini mengangkat tiga nilai budaya Cina yang berorientasi untuk mendapatkan kehidupan masyarakat yang lebih baik dengan memfokuskan kepada masalah-masalah yang ada, dan nilai budaya ini pun dapat merepresentasikan nilai budaya Timur yang pada umumnya menekankan pada harmoni pada kehidupan. Sebagai saran untuk peneliti selanjutnya, adanya modifikasi visual element budaya Cina yang digambarkan dengan versi barat, seperti gambaran Tao Tei dalam film, dapat diteliti lebih lanjut.
English Abstract
The Great Wall movie is a co-production movie of two countries, China and USA. The movie elevates the Chinese values that is practiced by the Chinese in facing the unfortunate condition of the Tao Tei. In analyzing this study, the Chinese values itself will represent Eastern values to adjust the Western characters that hold Western values in general. Therefore, the problem of this study is to find out what Chinese values are elevated as the representation of the Eastern values in The Great Wall movie. In this study, sociological approach to literature is used to see how the Chinese values are used by the Chinese characters as the guidance to practice their activities as a culture group. The result of this study shows that there are three Chinese values elevated in the movie. The first, Chinese society highly values harmony in which they achieve through the strong teamwork that they established in the process. The second, they have collectiveness as the form of benevolence that they value. The last is they always have respect and courtesy and it is valued by the society toward the ruler. In conclusion, The Great Wall movie elevated three Chinese values that are oriented to make the society’s life better by concerning their matters and it can represent Eastern values in general that mostly emphasize the harmony as well. It is suggested to the next researcher to analyze the Chinese’s elements of culture that has been visually modified into the Western style, such as the portrayal of the Tao Tei.
