Abstract

Material berpenguat serat alam memiliki nilai perpaduan dua sifat dasar yaitu kuat dan ringan. Salah satu serat alam yang dapat digunakan yakni serat sabut kelapa. Serat sabut kelapa sendiri mempunyai daya tahan yang tinggi sehingga cocok untuk dijadikan bahan baku material. Untuk mendapatkan kekuatan tarik serat maksimum perlu dilakukan perbaikan sifat mekanik serat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperbaiki sifat mekanik serat dengan metode silane-microwave. Metode ini merupakan perlakuan kimia-fisika yang dilakukan pada serat kelapa dengan perendaman larutan silane yang diikuti dengan pengeringan microwave. Dalam penelitian ini, konsentrasi larutan silane yang digunakan yakni 3%, 5%, 7% dan daya microwave yang digunakan yakni 100 watt dan 450 watt. Pengujian kuat tarik menunjukkan sifat mekanik dari serat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, nilai kuat tarik tertinggi diperoleh pada sampel serat kelapa dengan konsentrasi 5% pada daya 450 watt. Pada sampel tersebut diperoleh nilai kuat tarik sebesar 80,651 MPa. Peningkatan kuat tarik serat kelapa sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan yakni sebesar 45,322%.

English Abstract

Materials with natural fiber reinforcement have combination value of two basic properties of strong and lightweight. One of natural fiber that can be used is coconut fiber. Coconut fiber has high endurance that makes it suitable to be used as raw material. To get the maximum fiber tensile strength need to improve the mechanical properties of fiber. This study aimed to improve the mechanical properties of fiber with silane-microwave method. This method was a chemical-physical treatment that performed on the coconut fiber by soaking the fiber with silane solution followed by microwave drying. In this study, the concentration of silane solution which was used in soaking process were 3%, 5%, 7% with power of microwave at 100 watts and 450 watts. Tensile strength test showed the mechanical properties of the fiber. The results showed, the highest tensile strength value obtained on coconut fiber sample with 5% concentration of silane at power of 450 watt. In this sample values obtained tensile strength of 80,651 MPa. Increased coconut fiber tensile strength before and after treatment which amounted to 45,322%.
