Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa besar kekuatan tarik yang di pengaruhi proses alkalisasi dengan perbedaan pada pemberian kadar kosentrasi NaOH pada perendaman serat mendong (fimbristylis globulosa). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode experiment, dengan ukuran spesimen tarik sesuai standar ASTM D638-03. Dalam penelitian ini, digunakan komposit serat mendong tanpa perendaman NaOH, 6% perendaman NaOH, 12% perendaman NaOH dan 18% perendaman NaOH. Pembuatan spesimen komposit untuk uji tarik dilakukan dengan metode Vacuum Infusion yang memiliki tekanan maksimal -23atm pengujiannya menggunakan alat uji tarik serat tunggal dengan merek IMADA berkapasitas 50-60N , pengujian komposit polyester berpenguat serat mendong menggunakan alat uji tarik berkapasitas max load 20KN. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komposit bermatrik polyester dengan perendaman 2 jam NaOH 12% memiliki kekuatan tarik paling tinggi dibanding dengan variasi perendaman yang lain. Perbedaan kekuatan tarik dari berbagai variasi disebabkan oleh sifat dan karakteristik serat akibat perendaman NaOH yang berbeda pula. Perendaman NaOH bertujuan untuk memperbaiki sifat permukaan untuk menghilangkan kotoran di permukaan serat dan serat serat yang tumbuh tidak sempurna pada serat mendong untuk meningkatkan kekuatan ikatan antara serat dan matrik polyester. Tetapi pada perendaman 2 jam konsentrasi 6% sampai 12% NaOH berangsur-angsur naik namun pada kosentrasi 18% NaOH dengan waktu perendaman sama 2 jam menurunkan kekuatan tariknya dikarenakan zat dan komposisi kimia pada serat terdegradasi dan melemahkan kekuatan serat saat bercampur dengan matrik polyester.

English Abstract

The aim of the stude was the find out the relation between alkali zation procees to tensile strength with the difference in the concentration of NaOH in Mendong fiber (fimbristylis globulosa). This study employed an experimental method, tensile specimens based on the ASTM D638-03 standards. In this study, Mendong fiber composites were treated by varied with it immersion % no NaOH, 6% NaOH, 12% NaOH and 18% NaOH. Manufacture of composite specimens for tensile test was conducted using the Vacuum Infusion which have a maximum pressure of -23atm and the test used a single fiber tensile test equipment make by IMADA with a capacity of 50-60N. Testing of Mendong fiber reinforced polyester composites wasdone by using a tensile test with 20KN max load. The results showed that a matrix polyester composite with 2 hours immersion of 12% NaOH had the highest tensile strength compared to other immersion variations. The difference in tensile strength of various variations was caused by the nature and characteristics of fibers due to different NaOH immersion. Soaking NaOH was aimed to improve surface properties and to remove impurities on the fiber surface and imperfect growth fibers in Mendong fibers in order to increase the bond strength between polyester fibers and matrix. During 2 hours immersion with concentration of 6% to 12% NaOH, the tensile strength was gradually incroased. But for 18% concentration of NaOH the tensile strength was ofde creased. This phenomenal was caused by degrodued and weakened of fibre due to changes in substance to chemical composition of fibre in composite.
