Ramadhan, Iusvaldio (2018) A Southern Legacy: Culture Of Honor Depicted In The Novel The Little Friend By Donna Tartt. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

Donna Tartt’s The Little Friend is a work of southern literature. Southern literature in itself is a distinctive regional genre of American literature. It depicts the aspects found in the region, including the notion of honor. When talking about regional genres, regional myths are relevant. Each region has its own. There are two classes in the novel, mainly the poor whites, the Ratliff family, and the aristocratic whites, the Cleve family. They have their own way in actualizing their honor. This study has the objectives to elaborate the concept of honor between the two classes. The approach used is socio-historical in order to explain how the notion of honor in Southern U.S. has become legacy that is influenced by the regional history. Literature regarding honor is also needed to explain the different concepts of honor between the white aristocrats and the lower-class whites. The depiction of the gothic and the ideal prominent in the genre is also used to elaborate the characters’ motivation. The aristocratic whites, here the Cleve family, often tell the stories of their upbeat past and lost fortunes, but the gothic depiction challenges that idealized narrative. They are also protective to what remains of their family’s honor. The poor whites, the Ratliffs, are described with gothic quality through their physical decays that reflect their moral decadence. This makes them a stranger to the concept of honor because they are looked down upon in their community. Thus, the distinct culture of honor in the South is the legacy from its turbulent history.
