Abstract

Buku teks adalah sebuah media tercetak pada proses belajar dan mengajar yang membantu siswa dan guru dalam mencapai tujuan dan sasaran dari belajar Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Buku teks tidak boleh mengandung ketidak setaraan gender atau bias gender. Untuk itu, peneliti bermaksud untuk mengidentifikasi representasi gender pada buku teks dalam bentuk teks dan ilustrasi dari setiap gender. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif sebagai desain penelitian. Ojek penelitian ini adalah sebuah buku Bahasa Inggris untuk kelas X. Untuk mengoleksi data, peneliti menggunakan 4 kategori utama dalam bentuk table. Kategori tersebut diadopsi dari Stockdale (2006). 4 kategori utama dibagi menjadi 10 sub-kategori. Hasil penelitian dari tabel menunjukkan bahwa presentase dari setiap kategori mempunyai selisih yang beragam. Selisih tertinggi adalah 100% yang mana adalah proper name pairs pada firstness, dan sisanya sangat lebih dari 5%. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa buku ini adalah bias terhadap laki-laki dan lebih menggambarkan laki-laki daripada perempuan. Sedangkan, selisih dari total keseluruhan dari representasi kedua gender di dalam buku teks ini adalah 1.8%, ini mengindikasikan bahwa buku ini seimbang. Hal ini sesuai dengan peraturan pemerintah bahwa buku teks tidak boleh mengandung bias gender.

English Abstract

Textbook is a printed medium in teaching and learning process which helps students and teachers in achieving aims and objectives of EFL learning. The textbook should not carry any gender imbalanced or gender bias. Therefore, the researcher attempted to identify the gender representation in a textbook in form of texts and illustration of each gender. This study used descriptive quantitative as the research design. The object of this study is an English textbook for grade X. To collect the data, the researcher used 4 main categories in form of tables. The categories were adopted from Stockdale (2006). The 4 main categories were divided into 10 sub-categories. The result of the tables showed that the percentage of each categories has various gaps. The highest gap was 100% which was proper name pairs in firstness, and the rest was greatly more than 5%. This result indicated that the textbook was biased to male and more portrayed male rather than female. While, the gap of total of the gender presentation of both gender in this textbook was 1.8%, it indicated that the textbook was balanced. It is suitable to the Indonesian government’s rule that is the textbook should be not contained gender bias.
