Abstract
Idiom adalah pola bahasa yang tidak dapat diubah dalam bentuknya dan idiom membawa makna masing-masing yang tidak dapat dipisahkan dari setiap kata-katanya atau komponen masing-masing. Singkatnya, idiom tidak bisa diterjemahkan kata demi kata. Oleh karena itu, penerjemah diharuskan memiliki pengetahuan yang luas tentang idiom dan juga maknanya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengklasifikasikan jenis ekspresi idiomatik dan juga strategi penerjemahan yang diterapkan oleh penerjemah dalam film “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dan metode penelitian analisis dokumen karena data tersebut di ambil dalam bentuk tertulis dan didapat dari sebuah film. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah film karya Tim Burton berjudul “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Peneliti mengklasifikasikan jenis idiom berdasarkan teori oleh Makkai (1972), dan untuk strategi terjemahan dari teori oleh Baker (1992). Ada 89 idiom yang ditemukan dalam film ini. Makkai (1972) mengkategorikan idiom menjadi 6 tipe yaitu phrasal verbs idioms, tournurne idioms, irreversible idioms, phrasal compound idioms, incorporating verbs idioms, dan pseudo-idioms. Baker (1992) mengkategorikan strategi penerjemahan menjadi 4 jenis yaitu using an idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, dan translation by omission. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa idiom yang paling banyak digunakan yang ditemukan dalam film adalah tipe compund frasal dengan 50 data. Sementara untuk strategi penerjemahan, peneliti menemukan bahwa terjemahan oleh parafrase merupakan strategi yang paling banyak digunakan penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan film dengan 50 data. Peneliti menyarankan peneliti selanjutnya untuk melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut tentang ekspresi idiomatik namun tentu saja dalam objek yang berbeda misalkan subtitle film, lirik lagu, iklan, dll. Masih banyak teori yang bisa digunakan untuk menemukan berbagai jenis idiom.
English Abstract
Idioms are pattern of language of which their form cannot be changed since idiom carry their own meaning which cannot be separated from that of their individual words or components. In short, idiom cannot be translated word by word. Therefore, a translator is required to have a broad knowledge of idiom and its meaning. This study aims to classify the types of idiomatic expression and also the translation strategies that is applied in translating “The Nightmare Before Christmas” Movie. This research employed qualitative approach and document analysis in design because the data were in written form and taken from a movie. The data source of this research was a movie by Tim Burton entitled “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. The researcher classified the type of idiom based on a theory by Makkai (1972), and for the translation strategies by Baker (1992). There are 89 idioms found in the movie. Makkai (1972) categorized idioms into 6 types. Those are phrasal verbs idioms, tournurne idioms, irreversible idioms, phrasal compound idioms, incorporating verbs idioms, and pseudo-idioms. Baker (1992) composed a few strategies in translating idiomatic expressions. Those are using an idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. It could be concluded that the most frequently used idioms that were found in the movie were phrasal compund type with 50 data. Meanwhile, for the translation strategies the researcher found out that translation by paraphrase was the most frequently used strategy in translating the movie with 50 data. The researcher suggests the future researchers who want to do similar research in the same topic to be more detailed in conducting their studies e.g. finding the meaning of the idiom that is found, evaluating the degree of meaning equivalence of the idioms in SL and TL, and etc. There are many different objects that can be researched for this topic such as movie subtitles, song lyrics, advertisement, newspaper headlines, etc. Also, there are still different theories which can be used in finding the types of idioms.
