Abstract

Komunikasi sebagai kebutuhan dasar manusia memiliki hubungan yang sangat erat dengan pemaknaan. Hal ini dikarenakan kunci untuk memahami komunikasi, adalah dengan memahami makna kata-kata yang digunakan, baik konotasi maupun denotasi. Denotasi berurusan dengan arti harfiah dari sebuah kata, sementara konotasi berkaitan dengan arti kedua dari kata tersebut atau yang biasa disebut sebagai makna figuratif. Cara termudah untuk belajar tentang makna figuratif ini adalah dengan mempelajari kata-kata kiasan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memahami penggunaan majas hiperbola yang digunakan dalam Game of Thrones dan artinya. Subjek ini sangat menarik karena penggunaan majas dalam percakapan sehari-hari belum banyak diteliti (Christodoulidou, 2011). Dalam upaya melakukan penelitian, studi ini akan menggunakan analisis kualitatif. Studi ini juga akan menerapkan teori McCarthy dan Carter (2004) tentang karakteristik hiperbola untuk membantu menentukan apakah dialog yang ditemukan termasuk ke dalam majas hiperbola atau tidak. Analisis studi ini telah menunjukkan bahwa ada 26 hiperbola yang digunakan dalam Game of Thrones. 26 ungkapan ini terbukti diklasifikasikan sebagai hiperbola karena mereka menunjukkan ekspresi dan kesan yang berlebihan.Mereka juga menunjukkan karakteristik hiperbola yang dirangkum oleh McCarthy dan Carter (2004). Masing-masing data hasil temuan ini tentu saja memiliki makna dan maksud sendiri-sendiri dalam upayanya memberikan penekanan pada ekspresi atau percakapan mereka. Walaupun begitu, majas hiperbola bukanlah satu-satunya kata kiasan yang ada. Selain majas hiperbola, ada jenis lain dari majas seperti simile, metafora, personifikasi, ironi, dan hiperbola. Masing-masing memiliki karakteristik dan kegunaannya. Tiga majas yang pertama sangat umum digunakan dalam konteks tertulis seperti puisi, prosa, atau bahkan lirik lagu. Di sisi lain, majas dalam komunikasi lisan sangat jarang digunakan. Majas yang paling sering digunakan dalam konteks lisan adalah hiperbola. Dengan demikian, dengan mengambil Game of Thrones sebagai objek penelitian ini, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana hiperbola digunakan dalam Game of Thrones dan apa artinya. Game of Thrones sendiri adalah serial TV yang menceritakan tentang kehidupan beberapa keluarga bangsawan dan kisah mereka seputar perebutan Tahta Besi. Terlebih lagi, studi ini juga sangat menarik untuk diteliti lebih lanjut dengan menerapkan majas yang lain seperti metafora ataupun personifikasi yang mungkin bisa diterapkan. Atau, bisa juga dengan menggunakan bahan materi lain seperti pidato atau monolog alih-alih sebuah film.

English Abstract

Communication as the basic need of human has a close relationship with meaning. The key to understand communication is by understanding the meaning of the words, both connotation and denotation. Denotation deals with the literal meaning of the words, while connotation deals with the second meaning of the words or a figurative language. The easiest way to learn about figurative language is by learning figure of speech. The purpose of this study is to understand the hyperbole employed in Game of Thrones and what it really means. It is an interesting subject because not until recently a study of figure of speech has been closely examined in its role toward daily conversation (Christodoulidou, 2011). In order to conduct this study, a qualitative analysis towards figure of speech study would be held. The analysis used McCarthy and Carter (2004) characteristic of hyperbole to help determine whether the utterances that have been found are indeed classified into hyperbole or not. Moreover, the analysis had shown 26 results of hyperbole that had been used in the Game of Thrones. These 26 utterances were proven to be classified as hyperbole since they were showing exaggerated expression and impression and contain some of hyperbole’s characteristics. They are also showing characteristic of hyperbole provided by McCarthy and Carter (2004). Each of these findings has their own meaning and intention to give emphasis on their expressions or dialogues. However, hyperbole is not the only figure of speech. Beside hyperbole, there are other types of figure of speech, such as simile, metaphor, personification, irony, and hyperbole, each with their own characteristics and usage. The first three are very commonly used in a written context such as poem, prose, or even song lyric. On the other hand, it is rare to use figurative language in verbal communication. The most frequently used figure of speech in an oral context is hyperbole. Thus, with taking Game of Thrones as an object of this study, this study aimed to know how hyperbole has been employed in Game of Thrones and what it really means. Game of Thrones itself is a TV series which tells about the life of several noble families and their story of the struggle to take over the Iron Thrones. Moreover, it could be very interesting for further research or following study to analyze a movie using another type of figure of speech. They can employ personification or metaphor instead of hyperbole. It might also be interesting to use hyperbole in other media besides movies, such as speech and monologue.
