Abstract
Menurut data statistik dari Dinas Pendidikan Kabupaten Sumba Timur, skor ujian nasional untuk bahasa Inggris di tingkat sekolah menengah pertama rendah, sementara fasilitas dan infrastruktur yang dibutuhkan sudah ada dan mendukung. Keingintahuan bahwa guru mungkin menjadi alasan di balik skor rendah semakin kuat karena beberapa bukti muncul. Guru di Sumba Timur diasumsikan tidak menyadari peran guru terhadap keberhasilan proses belajar siswa. Terbukti dari fakta bahwa banyak guru hanya mengajarkan mengajar untuk menyelesaikan materi tanpa peran lebih banyak untuk mendampingi pemahaman siswa. Juga ditemukan bahwa banyak guru yang melakukan kekerasan verbal atau fisik yang menghalangi siswa pergi ke sekolah. Penelitian ini menginvestigasi persepsi siswa SMP di Sumba Timur tentang kriteria guru Bahasa Inggris yang baik. Ada 293 siswa sebagai responden survei cross-sectional ini dari total 9 kelas dari 3 sekolah menengah pertama yang mewakili sekolah menengah reguler, rujukan, dan unggulan. Para siswa menanggapi kuesioner yang berisi pertanyaan terbuka dan tertutup. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan tertutup terdiri dari 37 atribut guru bahasa Inggris yang baik yang dibagi menjadi lima kategori guru bahasa Inggris yang baik yang disediakan oleh Faranda & Clarke (2004). Kategori-kategori tersebut adalah hubungan, pengiriman, keadilan, pengetahuan dan kredibilitas, organisasi dan persiapan. Ada dua masalah penelitian yang dijawab dalam penelitian ini, (1) kriteria dominan apa yang diharapkan siswa untuk dimiliki oleh seorang guru bahasa Inggris yang baik, dan (2) apa persepsi siswa dari seorang guru bahasa Inggris yang baik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kriteria yang dominan dari seorang guru bahasa Inggris yang baik yang diharapkan oleh siswa termasuk hubungan dan pengiriman. Lebih jauh lagi, persepsi siswa tentang guru bahasa Inggris yang baik secara umum adalah bahwa seorang guru bahasa Inggris harus baik dalam berbicara dan berperilaku.
English Abstract
According to statistic data from Education Department of East Sumba District, the score of national examinations for English in junior high school level is low, while facilities and infrastructure needed are already exist and supportive. Curiosity that teacher might be the reason behind the low score is getting stronger as some evidences emerge. Teachers in East Sumba are assumed not to well aware of the role of teachers towards the success of the student learning process. It is proven from the fact that many teachers only present teaching to finish the material without more role to accompany the students understanding. It was also found that many teachers committed verbal or physical abuse that prevented students from going to school. This research investigates perception of junior high school students in East Sumba about criteria of a good English teacher. There were 293 students as respondents of this cross-sectional survey from total 9 classes of 3 junior high schools representing regular, referral, and featured junior high schools. The students responded to questionnaires containing open-ended and closed-ended questions. The closed-ended questions consist of 37 attributes of a good English teacher which are divided into five categories of a good English teacher provided by Faranda & Clarke (2004). The categories are rapport, delivery, fairness, knowledge and credibility, organization and preparation. There are two research problem answered in this research, (1) what dominant criteria do the students expect to be owned by a good English teacher, and (2) what are the students’ perceptions of a good English teacher. The results of this research indicate that the dominant criteria of a good English teacher expected by the students belongs to rapport and delivery. Further, the students’ perceptions of a good English teacher in general is that an English teacher should be good in both speaking and behaving.
