Abstract
Dua contoh dewa mitologis yang paling terkenal adalah Thor dan Loki dari kebudayaan Norwegia. Dua bersaudara ini adalah putra Odin (all father), dewa tertinggi dalam kepercayaan Norwegia. Kepercayaan tersebut dikemas dalam bentuk karya sastra, seperti Poetic Edda yang ditulis pada abad ke-13. Karya ini menjadi dasar dari sejarah kehidupan para dewa. Seiring berjalannya waktu dan teknologi, banyak film menceritakan kisah tentang dewa, termasuk Thor dan Loki dalam film superhero yang sangat terkenal, The Avengers. Dalam film, terdapat karakter yang disebut Thor dan Loki yang memiliki persamaan dan perbedaan antara karakter Thor dan Loki asli berdasarkan Poetic Edda. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan archetypal character Thor dan Loki dalam film The Avengers. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi archetypal untuk menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan antara archetypal characters pada Poetic Edda dan archetypal characters dalam film The Avengers. Karakter arketipe Thor dan Loki dalam Poetic Edda dapat ditentukan setelah mengidentifikasi kualitas karakter dengan menggunakan teori karakterisasi. Teori karakterisasi menentukan kualitas karakter dengan melihat penampilan karakter, dialog, dan reaksi karakter lain sebelum membuat kesimpulan terhadap archetypal characters mereka. Dalam analisis, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Thor in The Avengers memiliki kualitas khusus ini, mereka adalah: seorang kesatria kuat di baju besi, seseorang yang memiliki senjata khusus, seseorang yang terlahir tidak biasa, seseorang yang mengejar tujuannya sendiri, yang dikenal sebagai dewa mitologis dan bukan manusia, dan karakter yangtidak ingin terlibat. Kualitas-kualitas ini sesuai dengan kualitas anti-hero archetypal character. Sementara Loki dalam The Avengers menjelaskan memiliki kualitas sebagai berikut ini, mereka adalah: jahat dalam baju besi gelap, memiliki tongkat untuk menghukum, marah diluar kendali, obsesi untuk memerintah, dan pembunuh dan menyakiti orang lain. Kualitaskualitas Loki ini digambarkan melalui penampilan karakternya, dialog, dan reaksi karakter lainnya. Ini sesuai dengan kualitas archetypal character penjahat. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa archetypal charaters Thor dan Loki dalam film The Avengers berbeda dengan archetypal charaters mereka dari Poetic Edda. Itu karena karakter mereka memiliki kualitas yang berbeda yang menghasilkan karakterisasi yang berbeda, dan tentu saja, archetypal charaters yang berbeda.
English Abstract
Two examples of the most famous mythological Gods are Thor and Loki from Norse mythology. The brothers are the sons of Odin (all father), the highest God in the Norway belief. Thus belief is packed in the form of literary works, as Poetic Edda had written in the 13th century. This work seems to be the basic of the history of the life of the Gods. As the time and technology goes by, many movies tell the story of Gods, including Thor and Loki in a very famous superhero movie, The Avengers. In the movie, there are characters called Thor and Loki who have similarities and differences between the original Thor and Loki characters based on Poetic Edda. This study aims to find the archetypal character of Thor and Loki in The Avengers movie. This study used a qualitative method with an archetypal study approach to find the similarities and differences between archetypal characters on Poetic Edda and archetypal characters in The Avengers movie. The archetypal characters of Thor and Loki in Poetic Edda can be determined after identifying the qualities of the character by using characterization theory. The characterization theory determines the qualities of the character by looking into character appearance, dialogue, and reaction of other character before making conclusion towards their archetypal characters. In the analysis, this study finds that Thor in The Avengers has these particular qualities, they are: a strong knight in the armor, someone who possess a special weapon, someone who has unusual circumstance of birth, someone who pursues his own goal, known as a mythological God and non-human being, and a character that doesn’t want to be involved. These qualities are match with the qualities of anti-hero archetypal character. While Loki in The Avengers describes has this following qualities, they are: evil in dark cloak armor, possesses a punishment’s staff, out of control rage, obsession to rule, and murderer and doing harm to others. These qualities of Loki are portrayed through his character appearance, dialogue, and reaction of other character. It fits with the qualities of a villain archetypal character. Thus, this study finds out that Thor and Loki archetypal character in The Avengers movie is different with their archetypal character from Poetic Edda. It is because their characters are having different qualities which result to a different characterization, and of course, different archetypal character.
