Abstract
Instagram adalah sebuah sarana komunikasi yang memungkinkan penggunanya untuk berkomunikasi melalui gambar dan video. Karena itu, Instagram menjadi contoh baik yang kaya akan komponen visual dan verbal bahasa. G-Dragon adalah salah satu publik figure di dunia yang menggunakan Instagram sebagai sarana komunikasi. Dia adalah seorang artis dari Korea Selatan yang memiliki banyak prestasi dan menjadi artis Korea dengan follower terbanyak di Instagram. Oleh karena itu, studi ini dimaksudkan untuk menganalisa (1) bagaimana komponen verbal dan visual dari postingan Instagram G-Dragon menghasilkan makna, dan (2) citra apa yang dibawa oleh postingan Instagram GDragon. Kedua rumusan masalah tersebut akan dijawab menggunakan teori ‘visual grammar’ oleh Kress dan Van Leeuwen (2006). Analisa konten atau dokumen diterapkan pada studi ini dibawah pendekatan kualitatif. Studi ini menggunakan dua gambar dari akun Instagram GDragon yang dipilih berdasarkan tiga pertimbangan: situasi tergambarkan, populatitas, dan periode waktu. Oleh Karena itu, akun Instagram G-Dragon adalah sumber data penelitian. Studi ini mengungkap bahwa semua participant yang berkaitan dengan gambar membangun tiga jenis makna: representational, interactive, and compositional secara bersama-sama. Kedua gambar menunjukkan rangkaian peristiwa yang sedang berlangsung. Gambar pertama juga menunjukkan bagaimana represented participant saling bertautan untuk menghasilkan makna sedangkan gambar kedua menampilkan bagaimana makna dihasilkan melalui nilai-nilai simbolis. Gambar pertama disajikan untuk menunjukkan kekuatan, kasih sayang dan keakbraban. Sedangkan gambar kedua mendemonstrasikan pelepasan diri. Citra G-Dragon yang tercermin digambar pertama adalah ‘pria kaya’ dan ‘pencinta mode’ sedangkan ‘pengagum seni’ menjadi citra G-dragon di gambar kedua. Oleh karena itu, dapat dikatakan bahwa informasi tertentu yang dibawa oleh para represented participant secara tidak langsung mempengaruhi citra G-Dragon menjadi bervariasi. Dikarenakan studi ini fokus terhadap analisa gambar, diharapkan untuk peneliti selanjutnya menganalisa video dari media sosial terbaru untuk mendapatkan hasil analisis yang berbeda dan lebih kaya sehubungan dengan perkembangan teknologi dalam komunikasi.
English Abstract
Instagram is a communication platform which allows its user to communicate through pictures and videos. Therefore, Instagram makes up a good sample rich in visual and verbal components of language. G-Dragon is one of the public figures in the world who uses Instagram as his communication platform. He is a South Korean artist with a bunch of remarkable achievements and becomes the most followed Korean artist on Instagram. Hence, this study is aimed to analyze (1) how verbal and visual components of G-Dragon’s Instagram posts covey the meanings, and (2) what images are expressed by Instagram posts of GDragon. Both problems are answered by using the theory of visual grammar by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). The content or document analysis is applied in this study under qualitative approach. This study features two pictures of GD’s Instagram which are selected through three considerations: the situation depicted, popularity, and the period of time. Hence, GD’s Instagram is the main source of the data. This study reveals that all participants related to the pictures construct three kinds of meanings: representational, interactive, and compositional cooperatively. Both pictures show a series of unfolding events. The first picture also presents how the represented participants fit together to convey the meanings while the latter shows how the participants represent their meaning through symbolic values. The former picture is intended to show power, affection, and intimacy. Meanwhile, the latter one demonstrates disengagement. The images of G-dragon reflected in the first picture are ‘a rich man’ and ‘a fashion enthusiast’ while ‘an art admirer’ becomes G-Dragon’s image found in the latter picture. Hence, it is possible to argue that certain information carried by the represented participants indirectly affects GD’s images to be diverse from one to another picture. Since this study focuses on the pictures, the researcher suggests the future researcher to analyze a video from the recent type of social media to create a more varied and richer analysis regarding the technology development in communication.
