English Abstract
Tirto Adhi Soerjo is a press figure in the colonial era of the early 20th century in Dutch East Indies. He was a pioneer of the Indigenous Press with Soenda Berita, a media that is owned, managed, and destined for the Indigenous people in 1903. After that, he published Medan Prijaji, Soeloeh Keadilan, and Poetri Hindia. Aside from being a journalist, Tirto was also an organizer who founded the Sarekat Prijaji in 1906 and Sarikat Dagang Islamiah in 1909. In carrying out his journalistic activities he had to go to court several times and be thrown out in connection with the case of press offenses. This study sought to explore further thoughts and movements of Tirto Adhi Soerjo to spread national discourse through the literature and newspapers he wrote at that time. This could be to map the development of the history of the press in Indonesia, especially pre-independence. This study uses a communication history perspective with the journalism studies approach: De-Westernizing Journalism. The results of this study indicate the tendency of Tirto to use his media to engage in politics in disseminate national awareness discourses. This awareness is formed from his observations of the social reality of the community at that time, his association with several figures of the press and non-press, access to education, social status, and the organizations he participated in and founded. The practice of journalism that he did differ from Western journalism applied in the Indies at that time, so it was suitable to be analyzed using De-Westernizing Journalism.
