Abstract

Soekarno Hatta – Terminal Arjosari sebanyak 1.633 penumpang (6,85%), Terminal Arjosari – Stasiun Malang sebanyak 1.427 penumpang (5,48%), Stasiun Malang – Alun-Alun Merdeka Malang sebanyak 2.225 penumpang (9,59%), Alun-Alun Merdeka Malang – MOG sebanyak 1.267 penumpang (5,48%), MOG – Jl. Veteran sebanyak 1.607 penumpang (6,85%), dan rute Jl. Veteran – Jl. Soekarno Hatta sebanyak 1.307 penumpang (5,48%). Soekarno Hatta – Terminal Arjosari sebanyak 4.429 penumpang (2,45%), Terminal Arjosari – Stasiun Malang sebanyak 6.467 penumpang (3,36%), Stasiun Malang – Alun-Alun Merdeka Malang sebanyak 6.458 penumpang (3,67%), Alun-Alun Merdeka Malang – MOG sebanyak 3.739 penumpang (2,14%), MOG – Jl. Veteran sebanyak 2.703 penumpang (1,53%), dan rute Jl. Veteran – Jl. Soekarno Hatta sebanyak 10.954 penumpang (6,12%).

English Abstract

Malang is the second largest city in East Java, Indonesia, with an estimated population of 908.395. Hence, traffic congestion is unavoidable in the city. This typical urban problem has forced the community to look for better alternative public transportation in terms of quality, safety, comfort and efficiency, one of which is the Mass Public Transportation System or Sistem Angkutan Umum Masal (SAUM). To provide the community with qualified SAUM, monorail construction is being planned. This research was conducted to investigate the general characteristics and private trip characteristics (private cars and motorcycles) in Malang, which data were then used to analyze the potential of Monorail transportation construction plan in Malang. In addition, this research also investigated the passenger potentials of Monorail transportation mode in Malang. Primary data in the forms of general characteristics, trip characteristics, transportation preference, and Monorail route were collected using a set of Stated Preference questionnaires and direct interview with respondents. The number of samples needed in this research was measured using Slovin equation, resulting in a minimum sample of 400 private car passengers. Surveys were administered on weekdays and weekend in public places around Veteran Street, Soekarno Hatta Street, Malang Rail Station, Arjosari Bus Station and Malang Central Market. The obtained data were then analyzed using a descriptive statistic method to see the trip characteristics and Logit Binomial model to measure the probability of transportation mode preference, and Desire Line to determine the potential route of Monorail. The results of the descriptive statistic analysis showed that the majority of private car and motorcycle drivers were high school graduates males and students with an average monthly income of Rp 1.000.000,-. Most of the respondents supported the plan of Monorail construction in Malang. The results of MAT and Desire Line showed that the most potential and realistic Monorail routes was Soekarno Hatta Street – Arjosari Bus Station – Malang Railway Station – Merdeka Malang Town square – MOG – Veteran Street – Soekarno Hatta Street. The number of passengers transferred from private car passengers was predicted to reach 1.633 passengers (6,85%) for the route of Soekarno Hatta Street – Arjosari Bus Station, 1.427 passengers (5,48%) for the route of Arjosari Bus Station – Malang Railway Station, 2.225 passengers (9,59%) for the route of Malang Railway Station – Merdeka Malang Town Square, 1.267 passengers (5,48%) for the route of Merdeka Malang Town Square – MOG, 1.607 passengers (6,85%) for the route of MOG – Veteran Street and 1.307 passengers (5,48%) for the route of Veteran Street – Soekarno Hatta Street. The number of passengers transferred from motorcycle drivers was predicted to reach 4.429 passengers (2,45%) for the route of Soekarno Hatta Street – Arjosari Bus Station, 6.467 passengers (3,36%) for the route of Arjosari Bus Station – Malang Railway Station, 6.458 passengers (3,67%) for the route of Malang Railway Station – Merdeka Malang Town Square, 3.739 passengers (2,14%) for the route of Merdeka Malang Town Square – MOG, 2.703 passengers (1,53%) for the route of MOG – Veteran Street, and 10.954 passengers (6,12%) for the route of Veteran Street – Soekarno Hatta Street.
