Abstract

Infill wallswith functions such as enclosing building, dividing a large into several small places architectural point of view and providing wea r protection for inside of buildingare always found in real building. However, in typical building design, y are always treated as non-structural elements and neglected in design process. In this preliminary study, effect of RC infill wallon seismic responses of building was investigated using 2D and 3D single-story frames. linear analysis was conducted to minimize factor involved and to avoid interaction of nonlinear behavior of RC infill wall and frame member. MIDAS-gen program was adopted for analysis. In this study, effect of location and area of holes in wall were examined using 2D single-story frames. effects of layout of infill walls were investigated using symmetric and asymmetric 3D single-story frames. use of RC infill wall in 2D and 3D single-story frame can increase natural frequency as compared with pure-frame model; however natural frequencies were also affected by location of hole in infill wall, and if an extra span with full wall is added, such effect is reduced. Comparison of natural frequency between 2D and 3D frame with and without RC infill wall shows that frequency in 2D frame is higher than 3D frame; it indicates that 3D frame is more realistic for modeling. In 2D frame inclusion of infill wall will increase axial force at column support, while trend of axial force in 3D-frame is reversed. From investigation on 3Dsymmetric frame with RC infill wall, it is better to have walls on both sides of column to have better reduction in internal forces. On o r hand, use of RC infill wall at 3Dasymmetric frame can lead to reduction in internal force, however removal of some RC infill walls may lead to increase in internal force which maybe become even larger than those of pure frame especially for axial and shear force. Thus, from this studyit is recommended that to study effect of RC infill wallon seismic responses of building 3D model is more realistic.
