Abstract

English Abstract

For years, there has been considerable empirical evidence on the linkage between infrastructure, economic growth, and poverty reduction. However, most of these studies have been focused on cross-country analysis or national-level data, or have only covered economic growth as output. By using panel municipal-level data from 2000 to 2013, this study aimed to investigate the impact of infrastructure on economic growth and poverty reduction in Indonesia. The independent variables are household access to electricity and household access to safe water. Meanwhile the dependent variables are gross regional domestic product and the percentage of poverty rate. Firstly, all municipalities` data are analyzed as one pool. Secondly, data and results from the western parts` municipalities and the eastern parts` municipalities are compared and analyzed separately. The empirical results show that infrastructure has a positive and significant impact on economic growth and poverty reduction. This impact is found to be stronger in the western parts` municipalities as compared to the impact in the eastern parts` municipalities.
