Abstract

Akumulasi zat warna congo red di lingkungan perairan dapat membahayakan kesehatan manusia sehingga jumlah congo red di lingkungan perlu dikendalikan hingga pada tingkatan yang aman. A.microphylla merupakan tanaman yang tumbuh di perairan. Berdasarkan kandungan proteinnya yang tinggi, biomassa A. microphylla berpotensi untuk mengikat zat warna congo red dari media air. Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan biomassa dalam mengikat zat warna anionik, maka dilakukan modifikasi terhadap biomassa dengan mengimpregnasikan kromium(III). Penelitian ini mengkaji pengaruh pH larutan, lama pengocokan, dan jumlah kromium(III) yang diimpregnasi ke dalam biomassa untuk adsorpsi congo red. Percobaan dilakukan pada variasi pH awal larutan 4-7, lama pengocokan 60-210 menit, dan kromium(III) yang diimpregnasi sebesar 0 - 31,55 mg/g biomassa. Perhitungan congo red terikat oleh adsorben berdasarkan konsentrasi congo red sebelum dan sesudah proses adsorpsi. Konsentrasi congo red setelah adsorpsi ditentukan dengan menggunakan Spectronic 20. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pH awal larutan, lama pengocokan, dan jumlah kromium (III) terimpregnasi dalam biomassa mempengaruhi adsorpsi congo red. Kondisi optimum adsorpsi terjadi pada pH awal larutan 5 dan lama pengocokan selama 120 menit. Impregnasi 21,88 mg kromium(III) dalam 1 g biomassa A. microphylla meningkatkan kemampuan adsorben 2,86 kali dibandingkan dengan biomassa tanpa impregnasi kromium(III).

English Abstract

The accumulation of congo red in water environment can be dangerous to human health therefore the amount of congo red in environment should be reduced to a safe level. A. microphylla is one of plants which grows abundantly in water. Because of its high protein content, A. microphylla can be used to up take congo red from aqueous media. In order to increase its adsorption ability to anionic dye such as congo red, biomass was impregnated with chromium(III). The experiments were performed to investigate the effects of pH, shaking time, and amount of chromium(III) impregnated in biomass to the adsorption of congo red. Experiments were conducted at a various initial pH of 4-7, various shaking time of 60-210 minutes, and various loaded chromium(III) of 0 - 31.55 mg/g biomass. Calculations of bound congo red by adsorbent based on concentrations of congo red before and after adsorption process. Concentrations of congo red after adsorption process were determined by mean of Spectronic 20. The results showed that initial pH and shaking time as well as amount of chromium(III) loaded to the biomass influenced the adsorption of congo red. The optimum condition of adsorption took place at initial pH of 5 and shaking time of 120 minutes. Impregnation of 21.88 mg chromium(III) to 1 g A. microphylla biomass increased the ability of adsorbent 2.86 times compared with that without chromium(III) impregnation.
