Abstract

Chromium(VI) in aquatic as Cr 2O7 2-, HCrO4- and CrO42- that more toxic than chromium(III). Chromium(VI) can be bounded by the active sites –NH3+ of chitosan at acid condition by solid phase extraction method. This methods was based on the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions in solid phase followed by desorption using NaOH. This experiment has studied the effect of NaOH concentration as extractant, and the initial Cr(VI) concentration toward recovery Cr(VI). The results showed that the amount of Cr(VI) recovered were not affected of the NaOH concentration. The amount of Cr(VI) recovered were 16.82% to 18.92% at the NaOH concentration of 0.005 M to 0.2 M. The mechanism of Cr(VI) desorption was through the change of –NH3+ sites to –NH2 at basic condition. The maximum recovery i.e 38.72% was reached when using 5 mg/L Cr(VI) and 0.05 M NaOH.
