Abstract

Sense of place merupakan persepsi subjektif seseorang terhadap suatu tempat. Jika seseorang memiliki sense of place yang negatif, ia bisa abai terhadap tempat tersebut atau bahkan menghindarinya, sebaliknya, ketika seseorang memiliki sense of place yang positif maka ia menyukainya sehingga ingin berada di sana dan berinteraksi dengan tempat itu (Hashemnezhad et all, 2013). Pada lingkungan historis, sense of place dapat meningkatkan interaksi sosial (Graham et all, 2009). Elemen sense of place adalah aktivitas, image, dan bentuk (Montgomery, 1998). Bundaran Balanga ialah bentuk baru dari Tugu Perdamaian konflik tahun 2001 di Kabupaten Kotawaringin Timur. Namun, lokasi Bundaran Balanga jauh dari pusat kota, minim pembangunan, minim fasilitas, dan akses rawan kecelakaan, yang dapat menyebabkan rendahnya sense of place sehingga jumlah pengunjung dapat menurun. Karakteristik wilayah studi dipaparkan dengan analisis deskriptif. Tingkat sense of place dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan perhitungan rata-rata (Shamai, 1991). Kualitas elemen sense of place diidentifikasi dari persepsi pengunjung, dengan metode semantik diferensial yang menggunakan 7 skala yang mencakup dimensi evaluasi, potensi, dan aktivitas (Osgood, et all, 1972). Rekomendasi berdasarkan pada potensi dan masalah eksisting, tingkat sense of place, hasil analisis semantik diferensial, hasil analisis faktor, dan ekstraksi makna simbol Tugu Perdamaian. Sebanyak 47,45% pengunjung Bundaran Balanga ialah remaja awal dan akhir. Pada kawasan Bundaran Balanga, sudah ada berbagai guna lahan yang membentuk diversitas namun 66,5% merupakan lahan tak terbangun. Puncak kunjungan ialah pukul 16.00 – 17.30 WIB dengan kepadatan pejalan kaki dan keterisian lahan parkir yang tinggi pada hari Minggu. Aktivitas terdiri dari kegiatan individu dan kelompok baik pasif maupun aktif. Tidak ada acara mingguan untuk umum yang digelar baik dari pemerintah, swasta ataupun masyarakat di Zona B. Acara bulanan ialah penampilan tari tradisional di Minatur Budaya Kotim. Acara tahunan terdiri dari Mamapas Lewu, Isra Mi‟raj, dan Maayun Anak. Acara insidental ialah Isbat Nikah dan Trabas Kotim. Jalan Jenderal Sudirman merupakan path, Bundaran Balanga sebagai landmak, perpotongan jalan di sekelilingnya ialah nodes. Pada Tugu Perdamaian di dalamnya, terdapat pesan persatuan dan “penyang hinje simpei” yang berarti hidup rukun dan damai baik dengan sesama manusia, alam, maupun Tuhan. Adaptabilitas di kawasan tersebut bisa dikatakan sudah baik dilihat dari mayoritas bangunan sudah permanen dan terdapat bangunan dua hingga enam lantai. Kepadatan bangunan di Zona B sudah lebih tinggi dari Zona A dan C. Tinggi dan jumlah lantai bangunan belum cukup beragam pada wilayah studi. Seluruh bangunan memiliki halaman yang cukup besar (0,4 – 0,5 dibanding dasar bangunan) dengan jarak rata-rata dari batas pagar 5 meter. Skala pandang di kawasan Bundaran Balanga, khususnya di pusat Zona B, termasuk pada skala ruang intim, monumental, dan skala ruang kota. Pergerakan belum banyak menyebar ke Jalan Karang Taruna dan Jalan Pramuka. Akses dari lahan parkir ke Bundaran Balanga rawan kecelakaan. Jalur pejalan kaki belum terawat, ditumbuhi rumput liar, warna pudar, dan sampah berserakan. Belum tersedia tempat duduk untuk kegiatan berkelompok di area pejalan kaki sekeliling Bundaran Balanga.Tempat sampah masih kurang khususnya pada jalur pejalan kaki. Penerangan masih belum optimal, tidak setiap hari menyala, dan sebagian lampur tidak berfungsi. Belum ada fasilitas toilet umum dan area bermain anak-anak. Tingkat sense of place di kawasan Bundaran Balanga ialah attachment to a place yang berarti responden rata-rata telah melekat secara emosional. Pada tingkat attachment to a place menunjukkan Bundaran Balanga telah memiliki ciri khas atau keunikan yang dapat menjadi potensi dalam mengembangkan ruang publik tersebut. Nilai rata-rata terendah persepsi kualitas sense of place yang diukur dengan semantik diferensial ialah 3,18 pada indikator „fasilitas kurang – lengkap‟ yang mengukur sub-subvariabel ruang publik. Nilai rata-rata persepsi tertinggi, yaitu 5,48 ialah indikator „tempat biasa – tempat yang patut dihargai‟ untuk sub-subvariabel akses psikologis. Variansi kumulatif 7 faktor yang terbentuk ialah 71,09% dengan residu 26,0%. Faktor pertama yang diberi label keunikan tempat memiliki 10 anggota. Faktor kedua dilabeli keamanan dan kompleksitas memiliki 5 anggota. Faktor ketiga ialahkenyamanan mencakup 4 anggota. Faktor keempat, yaitu makna tempat, meliputi 3 anggota. Faktor kelima diberi label kejelasan memiliki 3 anggota. Faktor keenam disebut kelekatan terhadap tempat terdiri dari 3 anggota. Faktor ketujuh, yaitu kekompakan memiliki 2 anggota. Rekomendasi peningkatan faktor keunikan tempat ialah pengembangan guna lahan, kegiatan, serta acara yang terintegrasi dengan makna simbol Tugu Perdamaian dan karakteristik pengunjung, dan mengembangkan jaringan jalan lingkungan. Rekomendasi peningkatan faktor kedua ialah mengoptimalkan fasilitas penerangan, pengembangan diversitas dan aktivitas, serta penataan penandaan dan papan iklan. Faktor kenyamanan ditingkatkan dengan penambahan fasilitas ruang publik dan mengurangi batas kecepatan lalu lintas. Rekomendasi faktor makna tempat mencakup pengembangan kegiatan edukatif. Pada faktor kejelasan direkomendasikan promosi dan informasi melalui komunitas, penataan penandaan, dan kontrol tinggi bangunan. Rekomendasi faktor kelekatan terhadap tempat ialah pengembangan aktivitas di Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. Rekomendasi faktor kekompakan ialah pengembangan diversitas dan mengendalikan densitas bangunan.

English Abstract

Sense of place is a subjective perception of people about a place. If people have negative sense about a place he might be indifference to that place or he might avoid it, while, when people feel positive sense to a place it means that he love that place and wanted to be there and communicate with it (Hashemnezhad et all, 2013). In historical environment, sense of place can increase social interaction (Graham et all, 2009). Elements of sense of place are activity, image, and form (Montgomery, 1998). Bundaran Balanga is a new form of Tugu Perdamaian of a conflict in 2001 in Kotawaringin Timur Regency. But, the location ia far from the city center, surrounding by vacant lands, lack of facilities, and in risky traffic accident roads that can make level of sense of place be low then reduce number of visitors. Characteristics of sense of place in study area explained by descriptive analysis. Level of sense of place analyzed descriptively by measuring the mean (Shamai, 1991).Sense of place elements quality identified based on visitors perception, by semantic differential technique with 7 scales those include evaluation dimention, potential dimension, and activity dimension (Osgood et all, 1972). Recomendations are based on exixting potentials and issues, level of sense of place, semantic differential technique output, factor analysis output, and extraction of simbolic meaning of Tugu Perdamaian. As many as 47,45% visitors in Bundaran Balanga are 12 – 25 years old. In Bundaran Balanga area, there are various land uses as the diversity but there are 66,5% vacant land. Peak visiting time is at 16.00 – 17.30 Western Indonesian Time. Pedestrian density and parking are high on Sunday. The activities include individual, group, passive, and active activities. There is not public event that held by government or private party in Zone B. Monthly event is traditional dance performance in Miniatur Budaya Kotim. Annual events are Mampakanan Sahur and Mamapas Lewu, Isra Mi‟raj, and Maayun Anak. Incidental events are Isbat Nikah and Trabas Kotim. Jenderal Sudirman Road is the path, Bundaran Balanga is the landmark, and road intersections around Bundaran Balanga are the nodes. In Tugu Perdamaian that inside Bundaran Balanga, there is symbol that means “penyang hinje simpe” or living in harmony and peace each other (human), with nature and with God. Adaptability in that area is good considered by domination of permanent building and there are two till six floors buildings. Density of building in Zone B is higher than Zone A and C. Building height and floors not diverse enough. Most of the buildings have a large yard (0,4 – 0,5 of the land plot) with average distance from the fence to the building is 5 meters. Scale in Bundaran Balanga area, especially in the center of Zone B, categorized to intimate scale, monumental scale, and city scale. There are not many movements to Jalan Karang Taruna and Jalan Pramuka. Access from parking area to Bundaran Balanga is traffic accident-prone. Pedestrian ways are not well maintained where there are many weeds and garbages, and the color has been dull. There is not chair for group activities on pedestrian ways around Bundaran Balanga. It is lack of trash can, especially on the pedestrian ways. The lighting is not optimal which is not on everyday, and a few lamps are not working. There is not toilet and play area for children. Level of sense of place in Bundaran Balanga area is attachment to a place that means respondents, at the average, have emotional attachment to Bundaran Balanga. This level shows Bundaran Balanga has characteristic or uniqueness that can be potential in the development. The lowest mean of sense of place quality indicators perceived by respondents in semantic differential valued 3,18 which is on „lack of facilities – available‟ as an indicator of public realm quality. The highest mean is valued 5.48, on „ordinary – respectful place‟ as an indicator of quality of psychological access. Cumulative variance of 7 factors that resulted is 71,09% with 26,0% non-redundant residuals. First factor is labeled as place distinction includes 10 members. Second factor is labeled as security and complexity includes 5 members. Third factor that called comfort consists of 4 members. Fourth factor that is place meaning includes 3 members. Fifth factor as explicitness includes 3 members. Sixth factor that labelled as attachment includes 3 members. Seventh factor that is compactness includes 2 members. Recommendations to enhance sense of place by place distinction factor are developing land uses, activities, and event those integrated to symbolic meaning of Tugu Perdamaian and visitor characteristic, and developing streets. Recommendations on second factor are optimizing lighting facilities, developing diversity and activities, and maintaining signage and reclame. Comfort factor can be increased by equipping facilities of public realm and reducing traffic speed. Recommendations on place meaning factor are developing educative activities. Recommendations to enhance sense of place by explicitness factor are promoting and sharing information via community activities, adding and maintaining signage, and controlling building height. Recommendation on attachment factor is developing activities on Jenderal Sudirman road. Recommendations on compactness factor are developing diversity and controlling building density.
