English Abstract
Burn is one of the most common trauma found in daily life. Several studies have shown that chitosan contained in crab shell is available to be used as wound treatment material. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of chitosan ointment extracted from crabs (Portunuspelagicus) then compared to commercial ointment (neomycin sulfate and placenta extract) in increasing epidermal thickness and EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) expression on rat skin in burn model. The rat used in this study were white male rat (Rattusnorvegicus) Wistar strain aged 2-3 months given second stadium burns on their skin. Rats population was divided into 2 groups, each group consists of 12 rats. A group was treated with chitosan ointment and one other was treated with commercial ointment. The groups were divided into 3 subgroups with therapy on day 1, 3, and 7th. The thickness of the epidermis was observed histopathologically by Hematoxylen Eosin (HE) staining and EGF expression was measured using immunohistochemical methods. Data analysis was performed in Independent Ttest (α = 0,05). The results of this study showed that chitosan ointment extracted from crabs (Portunuspelagicus) shell had no significant difference with commercial ointment in increasing EGF expression and epidermal thickness from day 3. It can be concluded that 5% chitosan ointment can be used as alternative burns therapy
